False Alarm :(

my husband and I just got home from the hospital after a false alarm.

I'll be 38 weeks on Friday and today I was in the bathroom about to get in the shower and felt a trickle down my leg. It was clear, didn't smell like pee, and was very watery. That was all though, just the small trickle and it was done.

So I called my OB and he asked me to go for an assessment at the hospital as it could possibly be a slow leak of fluid. We packed the truck with the car seat and our bags, hoping this is it! I realise my due date isn't for 17 days, but physically I'm ready for this baby to enter the world lol

Anyways the nurse did a swab and turns out it wasn't my water breaking, they believe it's just very watery mucus....good news is that baby and I are both very healthy, but we were getting so excited to possibly come home with the little guy!

I also want to take this chance to whine about how much the swab HURT! Honestly it killed! And now it stings when I pee and things are bloody :(

Sorry for the rant...just feeling down after getting so excited. On the plus side, I started getting my colostrum this morning! This is something I've been very concerned about since my mom never got colostrum or milk with brother or I.

Tomorrow morning I have an ultrasound to check the babies position and fluid levels, so I have that to look forward to as well :)

Anyone else have false alarm stories? Thx for reading!

Re: False Alarm :(

  • That's so disappointing! I had the exact same thing happen to me with the watery mucus just two days ago. I debated and debated on if I should call the doctor but it was the middle of the night and I figured if it was labor I would know for sure soon enough and if it was leaking fluid it wouldn't have stopped after that one time.

So boo for us both!! :(

  • Ya definitely feel like I over reacted, but at the same time was just following my OBs advice. Let me tell you, be glad you didn't go in and do that swab, it was horrible!

As a FTM is so hard to know when it's the real deal lol just keep thinking happy thoughts I suppose, only 2-3 more weeks!
  • This happened with my first. I went in Saturday morning around 2am, they sent me home saying it wasn't fluid (I know it was- I know where it was coming from but must have eased up by the time I got to L&D) I was back at 4am Sunday with bleeding and that time tested positive for fluid and had my daughter Monday morning. It all began at 38 weeks 5 days.

I say always best to get checked! Good luck w the ultrasound.
  • I went into the dr yesterday afternoon for contractions that had been convicted about 7 minutes apart for 3 hours to see what was going on and she sent me home afteronitoring telling me to pack my bags and get ready for the hospital and wait until my water broke or contractions were 5 minutes apart. Waited until contractions were 4:30 apart and went to hospital at 10:15 last night only to be sent home 2
Hours later bc only 1 cm dilated still! The contractions are awful but nothing is changing so I understand the disappointment!
  • If your contractions aren't getting closer together after a couple of hours timing them you're not ready to go. Regular is good but they need to get closer together whilst you're timing them.

My birth centre tells us to contact them and be ready to go when they're 4-1-1
4 minutes apart, 1 minute in length, for 1 hour.

I've had a few nights of sore 7 minutes apart contractions that went from 7pm to 5am but they have to get closer together before anything is going to happen.

Good luck with the timing and figuring it out - the babies will all be out soon!
  • @sugargrenade thank you so much for the info! I'm an FTM so figuring this out is difficult! Hoping something happens today!
  • This is why I don't rely on timing of the contractions to go in. They will send you home 9 out of 10 times if you're less than 4cm. I know there are a few women who had very mild contractions when they're in active labor, but this is about as common as your water breaking the way it does in the movies. For most women, those real active labor contractions will totally stop you in your tracks and you will really have to concentrate on your breathing just to get through them. This is what I wait for before I leave for L&D. Unless you have a long drive to the hospital, waiting for these kind of contractions will save you a lot of heart ache and frustration. I know it's hard to tell when to go in for FTMs and even some STMs.
  • I know I'm late to this thread but I was just at the hospital this Monday at 38 weeks because of false labor. Turns out I got my son's stomach virus and the aggressive vomiting was causing my regular contractions which were 4 minutes a part. As soon as the nurses got my nausea under control the contractions pretty much stopped. I left at 2cm and 30% effaced. While it would have been nice to meet my twin boys, I'm kind of glad they didn't come because my doctor is on vacation. I say all that to say, I feel your pain.
  • I was having contractions for 8 hours yesterday, 10-20 min apart, went to bed around 10, hoping to get a little sleep and then be able to go to the hospital. But once I went to sleep, nothing happened, and now I'm getting anxious hoping it'll start up again! I'm 3 days past due, scheduled for an induction of Thursday, so I'm really hoping she'll make an appearance before then! I've been fully effaced for a couple weeks now, but was only 1/2 cm on Monday. Reading these threads helps, I know I'm not alone!
  • I had the exact same thing happen a couple months ago and instead of putting the swab in my vagina the nurse put it in the wrong hole! Straight up into my urethra pretty much. I screamed it hurt so bad.
But yeah, was a false alarm for me as well
  • So disappointing! My last false alarm was at 36 weeks. I ended up having terrible stomach pains and told the midwife that I really wasn't sure if I was in labor or just really sick. But all the contractions made the nausea worse and vice versa. (I typically have regular contractions periodically that come for 4-5 hours at a time but are every 3-5 minutes and last 45-90 seconds. My doctor told me to just base my decision off of my level of discomfort.) Not fun at all! We now keep our bags packed and the car seat in the car, even though I swore I wouldn't do that until much later. But plans change! Glad she's waiting until she's ready, but I wish I knew when that could be!
