cell phone?

this may be posted else where....but anyway what are your thoughts on how old kids should be for a cell phone? i'm pondering getting my 9 almost 10yr old one...but not a fancy one just one where I can call him or he can call me.....for instance he has wrestling and the practice is only an hour and I would rather not sit in there with his 18month old sister having a fit but I don't like the idea of him not having contact with me if need be.....

When my girls turned 10 I got them a basic phone (talk and text ). Now they are 12 and 14 and I bought them a smartphone. Mainly bc the plan was cheaper. But it helps when they go on school trips and I have to pick them up.
