Induction experience?

Hi everyone! We are 10 days overdue and going in to get induced tomorrow. I was wondering if anyone has any experience/advice with this? First baby nerves and all!

Re: Induction experience?

  • I was induced with both my children. The first was because he was 41 weeks and the second was because I had preeclampsia. I had Cervicil with both of them. With the first, that was enough to get things started. With the second, I needed the Pitocin as well.

I have two pieces of advice. Fist, eat a decent meal (if your doctor says you can) before you go in. If they plan to use the Cervicil, it is inserted for 12 hours and my doctor doesn't let you eat from the time they start that.

Second, don't feel like you failed somehow because you are having an induction. I don't know how you feel about it, but I was all for everything natural and thought the baby would come when it was ready. Sometimes it just needs a little push and things will all work out in the end. After two inductions, I have two healthy kids.

  • I just went through an induction last week that ended in "failure to progress" and I ended up having an emergency cesarean. Don't be nervous, honestly once you're at the hospital and in your room, the nerves go out the window and you're focused on one thing; delivering a happy healthy baby. Be prepared for the pitocin to kick your ass, because it will and quickly too. If you're wanting to hold out on the epidural until you're close to pushing, I would use Fentanyl for pain management, and a hot pad, up until you're ready for the epidural. If you took birthing classes, do whatever comes naturally to you. Sometimes the classes help, sometimes they don't.

Don't let people push you into doing, or taking, something you don't want. BRING SNACKS!!!! You WILL be hungry and you will vomit at least once! Other than that, just try to relax, breathe, and basque in this experience with your hubby!

  • It is possible to have Pitocin and not any pain medicine. I just did it with DD.
  • I was induced feb 19, i went in 7pm and by 7pm the next day due to failure to progress, baby being face up and the pitocin spiking and dropping baby's heart rate we had to do a c section. 1/3 of births are c section so be prepared for that. Also don't feel guilting for getting pain meds if you need them. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. don't let anyone tell you "well, I didn't need any" - that's them. It doesn't make you weak or a bad mom. Go in prepared with the right frame of mind and yes enjoy your favorite food before going in. xx good luck!! Congrats :)
  • I was induced with both of my children. It was a positive experience with both. With both I just had Pitocin as I was already 80% effaced. With DD I went in at 1 am and my water broke on its own at 10 am. She arrived at 5:00pm after an hour and a half of pushing. This little man I went in at 5 am, dr broke my water at 8:30. He arrived after 3 pushes at 2:00pm. I got an epidural with both because the contractions were intense once my water broke. With DS I worked through some strong contractions for 2 hours due to both anesthesiologists being in the OR for csection. I survived but the epidural was a wonderful relief. It is do able without pain meds if you want to do it and put your mind to it.
  • I was induced 2 weeks ago due to high bp. I was expecting to rush to the hospital w painful contractions or bc my water broke..def not what I was expecting but had a great experience. They started me at 3am & had my baby at 8pm. I had about 3 hrs of terrible back labor but once I got the epi I was fine. I only pushed for 20 min though. I laid around a lot which was ok. Good luck!!
  • I was induced because of high blood pressure and there was a diminishing amount of fluid around my little guy. At about 8pm I had a foley catheter inserted, as they didn't want to use cervidil and risk my BP going even higher. In the morning, I was started on a really low dose of pitocin after the catheter was pulled out and they found that I was 3-4cm dilated. They kept me on pitocin that whole day, overnight, and the next day. The broke my water the second day. I was also stuck in bed with a catheter because I was on magnesium due to my BP getting up to about 200/120 at some points. I only ever made it to about 5-6cm and got stuck there, so we decided that a csection was the next step. I wouldn't dilate passed 5-6cm because my little guy's cord was wrapped around his neck twice and because of that, he wouldn't descend so that his head would engage and cause me to dilate more. I did ask for pain meds the second day so that I could get some rest. They gave me nubain and it worked pretty well.

I know that my birth experience wasn't typical and I really don't want you to worry. But, just keep in mind, some things do happen. I wish you luck!

  • I went in on the evening of feb. 2 (41weeks) with a closed and hard cervix. They started me on cervidil to try and open me up..
That was the start of a long night. Apparently that started strong contractions back to back, therefore I spent most of my night crying in pain (I have a low tolerance for pain). At around 1am the cervidil fell out on it's own however I was only dilated 1.5cm and my cervix was still thick so the pitocin was started, and the pain? Even worst. They gave me something for pain that knocked me right out (I don't recall the name) until 6am. At that point I was dilated 3cm and the nurse decided it was okay to give me the epidural and I agreed because after the night I endured I knew I would make it very far without it. After the epi I was able to get some rest but that was the only upside to it, I absolutely HATED the fact that I couldn't feel anything from my ribs down.
At 11 am, I had no progress from 3cm so the doctor decided to break my water bag.. That's when everything went south. From then on, the monitor was showing that with every contraction I had, the baby's heart rate would drop.. When the contraction was over it would go back to normal however after an hour of this pattern it was decided than an emergent csection was to be performed.
After I signed the papers things moved so quickly. I was moved to an operating room, they removed the epidural medicine and replaced it with something stronger, (although I couldn't feel a thing in the first place), and they got right to work. It wasn't until my husband came in the room dressed in scrubs and took a seat next to me that the reality of the situation hit me and I started crying.
Anyway from the time they replaced my pain medication and put up the sheet in front of me I hadn't even known they began surgery, but they did and soon after I had my princess in my arms and I was getting stitched up.. I hadn't felt a thing!

All in all, the induction didn't go as I thought it would (I planned for a natural labor) however I'm just glad my baby was born healthy and everything was okay in the end.
