Moving 2,000 miles with a newborn!?

Hey ladies! My husband and I just found out we will probably be moving across the country (Dallas to Seattle!) in July. If our little man arrives close to his due date he will be around 5 weeks old. Has anyone made a move with a newborn before?
Any advice?! The thought of selling a house, finding jobs and moving a newborn and two dogs 2,000 miles is overwhelming!

  • I might be in the same situation. I'm starting grad school in the fall and might have to move as well. I plan on paying people to move us. No way I will be able to pack us with a newborn. Hopefully lots of pre planning to ease some of the stress.

  • This sounds very overwhelming. All I have for advice is delegate what you can. I'll be thinking of you!
  • Last year our friends moved from Philly to California via car. They couldn't fly because their dog was too big. My friend had actually fractured her tailbone during delivery (large baby head small mama pelvis), so it was an interesting experience. She had to sit in the back because of her inability to get comfortable in the front seat. Their son was 8 weeks old then, and they just planned tons of stops along the way. She brought her pump in the car and a cooler, and she pumped and either breastfed or gave the expressed milk when he needed to eat. They said it was hard but they did the best they could and they survived. Good luck! It will be a challenge but our friends took it as an opportunity to sight see along the way and bring their son to places they probably won't normally go visit. =)

I moved from Texas to Virginia two weeks after my son was born in 2013.
My best advice is to get as much planning and packing done now. I was due the 2nd week of August. My husband had to be in virginia by August 20th to start his new job. He drove up in June to meet his new boss and hunt for apartments. He left his car there with my sister. (She lived close to his new job.). He took a one way flight back to Texas and we shared my car. We chose an apartment and found out the move-in date was mid July. With the help of family we packed and loaded everything into a uhaul. My husband drove it up to Virginia, unpacked, and set up our whole apartment
  • When I was a newborn my parents moved us from North Carolina to Seattle! They just made sure to not drive overnight and kind of made a vacation out of it! I think you'll be totally fine as long as you all can be in the same car. If you need extra help maybe ask a family member to take the trip with you! Usually people are sooooo willing to help with new babies!
  • No advise but seattle is awesome! Especially in summer.
  • Am in the same boat. We are moving from Germany to the US at the end of July, then to England in January. Our plan is to just buy what is needed for each stage when we arrive, so we are not moving as much. Buying about 10 outfits, a pack and play with newborn bassinet, and a car seat/stroller for the beginning. We have swaddlers and a carrier from my SIL. That will be enough for the first 6-8 weeks. Everything else can wait until after our move in July. We are dealing with this by refusing to overthink it or to let ourselves be dramatic about it. We are focusing on the excitement of building a new life from scratch, and discussing what non-negotiables we need to keep our sanity (eg, splurging for full service movers). Good luck!
  • I'm a FTM but also in a similar boat. We will be moving, finding new jobs etc from NY to OH shortly after baby is born. We are lucky we have family we are moving towards so I'm sure they will help a lot. I have also had many people tell me it is easier to do with and infant than a toddler! At least with a baby you can set them down and they sleep a bunch. With a toddler I imagine they would be into everything and need to be entertained more.

  • DH and I have moved cross country a few times, but never with a baby. We have done it with our cats each time, and we all know cats travel poorly, but that's still not really a comparison. If I had to do it, based on my previous moves, I'd have a company pack and move all my stuff, while I took the comforts with my own travel. Try to take the excitement of 'road trip!' and attempt to make it fun. PP's are right, at least newborns tend to sleep a lot, and / or should be lulled by the car's motion.

Also, I lived in Seattle, and loved it. Good luck!
