Neutral Colors for Nursery

So my husband and I just bought our first house and we are lucky enough to have a blank slate to work with for the nursery. Unfortunately we won't know what gender the baby is when we're painting (and I'm too impatient to wait a few months, I'd rather just get it over with) so we want to have a nursery that will fit either gender.  For those of you who are planning a neutral nursery what are your thoughts on colors or themes? I'd love some extra ideas!

  • Our nursery is a warm beige color with dark brown accents/furniture and some green too. We sort of have an "animal" theme, but that was incidental, not really planned. I have a feeling even if we have 10 kids they're all going to have that same nursery, haha, unless the babies chew their way through the crib bars (our son is working on that, he's part termite apparently). It has saved us so much time and money and energy having a neutral nursery that we can use for every baby and it's special to me that they all get to have the same one. :) I strongly recommend it, even if you do wait to paint until you find out the gender!
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • @VioletandRose I'm doing the same, white, grey and a touch of mint green. I'm actually super excited to see it come together
  • I'm doing something similar, grey, white, and yellow.
  • Our room is already painted a bluish gray so we are keeping it then if its a girl I'm adding ivory and soft pink into it. If its a boy brown and navy.

  • I was thinking a warm off white beige with gold stripes and natural lighter-med wood tones
  • We did an owl theme with grey with dusty blue and purple accents.  Once we found out DD was a girl I played up the purple.  In the end it is super cute and easily modified to "boy" colors. I had so much fun putting together DDs nursery though I might want to start over.  Currently thinking fox theme with silver, light green and a touch of orange.

  • Benjamin Moore "Winds Breath" is the perfect neutral. A warm grey. My youngest dd's room is painted that color and majority of my house too. She has pink bedding, but it would look equally gorgeous with blue, mint, green or really any accent color.
  • The room that will be baby's room is yellow and I just painted it like a yr ago and don't want to paint again. I've found a lot of cute options. Pinterest is the best invention ever! For a girl I can do yellow and purple or yellow walls with pink/green accents. For boys can do yellow/brown. The colors don't sound great but when you see some ideas people have, they are so cute.
  • I'm doing grey white and yellow :)
  • I'm doing grey, white, and yellow as well. I found the cutest fabric with little elephants (I'm sewing my own bedding) that I've used as my inspiration. The fabric has a matching wallpaper that I'll use on an accent wall and the other walls we be a yellow that is in the wallpaper. The crib will be white or grey.
  • We painted our nursery a really pale yellow when we didn't know what we were having.  We had a girl and it looks really nice with her pink, flowery bedding.  It would also look good with greens and blues in the room decor.
  • The rest of our house has a lot of gray or bolder blue/greens for walls and white trim so we use bold yellow pops of color. I'm just going to follow that same theme for baby but tone down the colors so they are all paler. Using "juniper breeze" (Who knew it was more than a bath and body works scent?!) by valspar for the walls with white furniture and grey, white, and yellow fabrics/accent pieces.

Love all the white and greys - you really can do anything with it. But if you want color, try the greens or blue greens. We used behr tide pools and loved it - pastel, but still bold and could've gone boy or girl with the right accent colors
  • We don't think we'll find out the gender. I'm going with a light green (the room that will be the nursery is already that color) with some grayish blue, coral, yellow, and gray (and of course white!) accents.
  • There are so many 'gender neutral' colors! teal, orange, blue, green, yellow, red, aqua, coral, etc…don't feel confined to grey and white and brown. I also don't mind if we have a girl she has some blue and green // if we have a boy he has some coral and purple accents.

We aren't finding out the gender; but we also will be keeping the walls the cream color they already are. I'd rather get artwork to go on the walls that can be replaced as our child gets older.
  • Paint the room green! If you're having a boy add blue if you're having a girl add pink! :)
  • AnythingBut Yellow
  • Gray, aqua and yellow but we won't paint until we move into our new house when baby is a few months old. So I have a while to decide what I exactly want to do with the walls!!
  • I've seen some cute Dr Seuss theme wall decor at Target, in deep red, teal and warm browns. There are lots of options with that theme and it's one that can grow with baby.

Also, elephants are popular right now, so if you're using gray, that's an option. I've seen some adorable bedding with elephants at Pottery Barn Kids. If Is realized how fascinated my son would be by elephants, I would've considered this theme when I was doing his nursery.

Another one I wish I'd thought of would be doing a "'make way for ducklings" theme, or grey and yellow with ducks.

Another option would be to pick a neutral base like brown or gray, and then you can add accents of blue, red, pink, lavender, or whatever suits your taste. Since I have a brown and white glider/ottoman, brown changing pad cover, and several accessories (lamp, wall shelf) that I spray painted brown for my son, I'll be using those for this baby's nursery area. If i have a girl, I'll be getting sheets with lavender in them and either making or buying wall decor in lavender with a butterfly theme.

  • We did orange, navy, yellow, cream and turquoise for my DS and it came out super cute.  I picked the bedding before we knew the sex.

  • We just bought a new home (new construction) a few months ago...before I found I was pregnant.  We already selected and had the home painted.  The room that will be the nursery (now the guest room) is a light beachy blue/green color (called Woodland Blue by Benjamin Moore).  I can make it girly with white and pink or boyish with navy blue and browns.

    Oh my gracious.  :x :-bd
  • We are doing 3 grey walls and an aqua accent wall. We've got aqua and grey elephants and will probably do white and grey chevron patterns too. If we have a boy we'll either add navy or orange. If we have a girl we're going to through in dark pink. :-)
    Good luck
