Pulse in my Ear

Hello ladies -
I am CONSTANTLY hearing my pulse in my ear, and it's driving me bat poop crazy. Is there anything I can do to stop it or is it something I just have to live with? Ps. Thanks in advance for not asking me to ask my doctor; that defeats the purpose of me asking you! ;)
Thanks!
:)

I've had this my whole life. I sleep with a fan to try and drown the sound out and it's worst with different types of pillows. If you've never heard it before it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out. Mine has gotten really bad since becoming pregnant so I think personally it's a blood flow issue. Don't google it. I just tried to find some info on something my anatomy teacher said long ago about a small artery in there that doesn't clap shut properly and all I found were horrible things. Just trust whatever your doctor may say :)

  • I've never heard of that before... are you sure it's pregnancy related?

  • Haha, no clue! I did a random Google stalk and apparently a lot of pregnant women get it, but no one listed any legit remedies. I never had it before, weird!
  • Do you ever get ear infections?  I hear my heartbeat in my ear when there is fluid built up.

  • Hmpf! I don't think so, but I guess I should get my ears checked out, maybe, everything feels fat and swollen, haha. Thanks

Is it just a thumping or is it accompanied by anything else (i.e. dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness)? My best guess if the answer to my first question is 'No' would be that maybe it's from the increase in blood circulation. I would say just to be safe, bring it up at your next appointment and I promise I'm not trying to be a jerk by saying that! :)
    • Also, feel free to pop by the daily symptoms threads with questions like these, you might be surprised some of the symptoms you have in common with other bumpies.
  • There are a lot of things that could be causing this but unfortunately someone is going to have to look in your ear to tell you what the problem is (and that will dictate your solution). I would make an appointment with your doc to get it checked out. Hopefully they can fit you in soon because I can only imagine how annoying that must be!
  • I can hear my heartbeat in my ear occasionally – often if I'm laying down on my side (i.e. right side = right ear). But I've never thought to ask my doctor? Then again, it doesn't happen too often and occasionally it happened before I was pregnant. I just assumed the slight increase in frequency was due to the increase in blood volume?
  • Thanks ladies! Yeah I guess I'm chalking it up to increased blood flow/volume. Still annoying though. Ha.
  • I know when I get water stuck in my ear everything sounds muffled and heavy, but I can hear my heartbeat in there pretty well. It IS pretty annoying. I hope it goes away soon, if not that would be something I would ask about at my next appt. Just to make it go away!

  • A friend of mine had a ringing in her ear that the doctor said was pregnancy related. They prescribed her a steroid.
  • There's this great person called a doctor...they can give you a legitimate answer as well as a resolution.
  • Get your ears flushed! They will do it at urgent care or a doctor.... If it's ear wax build up and the result is amazing and painless!

OP already explained that is not the purpose of her post.
  • I had that once during my pregnancy recently and it was weird! Just one evening and then it went away. I was trying to go to sleep on my side and had just had a large decaf latte, which I was worried excited me too much before trying to go to sleep. Would be interested to know if it's preventable & if it means anything.

My suggestion would be to ask her doctor as well. I don't think any of us are qualified to diagnose her problem. It could be serious, like high blood pressure or something else. Better safe than sorry.
  • I happen to be an audiologist :) and would recommend a visit with your doctor. Pulsing is a red flag and may require a referral to an ENT office to determine the cause. I hope you get answers!!

Purpose or not, that's who she needs to contact. A ringing in the ear can be signs of so many different things that could be potentially life threatening...why wouldn't you contact your doctor?

She never indicated she was not going to ask her doctor. I assume she is responsible enough to do so but maybe did not feel like calling with an after hours phone call.... OP can you weigh in here with some more info so we are not making assumptions on how you choose to handle your medical care?
  • Looks like this condition may be pulsatile tinnitus, which is common during pregnancy. I found this link to be helpful: https://tinnitusreliefinformation.com/tinnitus-in-pregnancy?wprptest2=1
In my case, I think it was brought on that time by a larger volume of coffee (even though it was decaf) than I had been used to during pregnancy. Of course any diagnosis or treatment should be under advisement by your doctor, but there is no harm in knowing that many pregnant women have this complaint.
  • Thank you ladies! Just wanted some Prego opinions.
  • I went through the same thing my entire first trimester ! I was the most annoying thing ever. I asked my doctor and he was absolutely NO help. It kind of just went away for me though...hope it does for you as well because I know the feeling !
  • I have had my ears feel plugged a couple of times during pregnancy. My doctor told me nothing was wrong but the higher blood volume pregnant women have can cause it. Stay classy with telling people to stfu though. Should get you far.
