Keeping it a Secret

Hello!  This is my first pregnancy, and I would love a little advice.  My husband and I have only told one person (other than our dog) that we are expecting, and it is a close friend who was also trying (we were constantly talking about negative tests etc., and I NEEDED to talk to someone besides just him).  Anyway, we are not telling our immediate family until March 14/15 because that will be right after our first ultrasound at 6 weeks, and both families will miraculously all be in town on back to back days.  However, we do not plan on telling anyone else until 12 weeks.  The issue is that I am a very petite girl (5'0" 115lb), and this bloat is starting to get out of control.  It is very noticeable compared to my usual tummy.  Will I make it to 12 weeks without people noticing?  Any tips?  I am trying to wear flowy shirts, but it is really hard at the gym.  (My husband owns a gym and I train people there).  I am also worried that they will notice as I start to take workouts easy (or start puking in the middle of them).  I appreciate advice on keeping this under wraps, or what to say when people start asking questions.  Also, my day job is as a high school teacher (plus my OB nurse is the parent of one of my students - yikes!) and students are never afraid to say what they are thinking.  Help!  :-)

Re: Keeping it a Secret

  • I am the same the same place I want to tell family because I'm excited but I want tonwaot till I'm out of the first trimester, so I'm 5 '0 and 93lbs so I know how you feel my husband keeps asking me if I'm pushing .y stomach out to look more pregnant....and really cutting down on salt will help a little bit but we're tiny it going to show so keep wearing loose clothes and trying crackers before you go work out and drink water slow to help from not throwing up. And mints while you work out should help.

  • We told our parents around 6 weeks for my first pregnancy and this time around as soon as we found out we told our parents. It's very hard to keep it a secret for 12 weeks -trust me i know this bc that's what we did with our first. The hardest part for me was the exhaustion and the irritability. I was a jerk and couldn't tell anyone why! Ha!

I have a huge girls trip coming up at the end of next month so i will tell them.just before we go bc I'm sure they will figure it out.

Good luck! I know it's tough to keep this a secret :)

  • I was always thin, but not petite. I was 5ft 6 115 lbs when I got pregnant with my first. The bloating normally goes down before the belly starts. I started showing at 14 weeks, I think.
Here's the thing. Everyone is different! Someone might be showing now and others might show later. I will tell you that thin/ petite frame woman are more noticeable when they're showing because there's nowhere to hide it. People were always telling me how big I was. I was all belly, but measuring normal at the drs. They said it's because I was tiny.
Does what I'm saying make sense? I don't think I explained it well.
  • I'm completely having a hard time hiding it as well. I work in the Veterinary field so I am trying to dodge radiographs and recovering patients and things that could be harmful to a pregnant woman, however I am doing this all with no one knowing yet because it's way to early for me to share. I'm 4 weeks and 4 days and I have a long way to go.

Just keep wearing Flowy shirts and try not to overwork yourself. :)
  • Thanks, ladies!!

  • I'm 5'0", 110 and 9 weeks pregnant with twins. I'm not showing at all yet. I may make it to 12 weeks with twins before anyone notices. Every woman is different though. My bloat was way worse earlier on. It has settled down now. I can still wear my size 0 jeans with no problem. Hopefully you'll be fine to wait until 12 weeks if that's what you want. Good luck!
  • Well that is good to hear!  If the bloat goes away that should help.  At this point it's just a little pooch over my pants, but I was afraid it might get worse.  My ab definition is still there, so that's a good sign!  :-)

  • My constant nausea/fatigue pretty much forced us to tell close family and some friends. After 3 weeks of 'getting over a stomach flu', I couldn't drag it out any longer and we 'fessed up to our parents, at 8 weeks.
  • They make flowy workout attire! I love it! You should be okay until 12 weeks and if anyone asks why you're taking it easy just say you have a pulled muscle or something.

  • @jennj904‌ you should definitely inform someone if your job poses risks like that.
