Low Amniotic Fluid

I've seen a few posts on here (not specifically in June 2015) regarding low amniotic fluid. Just wondering if anyone else due in June has been told their amniotic fluid is on the low side. I was told that mine was measured at 3 but should be around 4 at this stage, but it wouldn't be considered critical unless the levels dropped to a 2.5 or lower. My doctor said there was nothing I could do to increase the fluids myself, but I've read online a few homeopathic treatments including incorporating coconut water and Stevia into my routine. I'm remaining calm and just having faith that when I go Friday for my next sonogram everything will be the same and/or hopefully improved. Just a little nervous. Anyone else have experience with this? Thank you.

  • Fingers crossed that you maintain your current levels.. drinking lots of water couldn't hurt! Good luck!
  • My fluid level was low with my last pregnancy around 32 weeks. The doctor told me to drink lots of fluids and lay on my left side. After a week of modified bed rest and drinking tons, it was back to normal. I know that's probably further along than you are now, but I would try drinking more fluids anyway. Can't hurt!

  • I second the lots of fluids ... And sleeping on your left side. My cousin was told this when her fluid was low
  • Great news @JessBee410 - thanks for the update!
  • Great news!!
  • Yes, lots of fluids and rest when you can. Same as above. With my last, I had low fluid at 32 weeks. I believe it was in the 5s. I was hospitalized for 8 days until it went back in the 8s. If it would have gone down, they would have delivered me. I was on modified bed rest until 37 weeks when they delivered me, with monitoring every 3 days. Doc doesn't know what caused it or if it will happen again but I have monthly us with MFM to check. So far so good. I'm drinking tons of water this time and sitting when I can. Not that easy with a 1 year old. Best of luck. Wishing you lots of fluid!!

  • I was told my fluid was low and baby's growth was several weeks behind two weeks ago. I have been in and out to check the fluid and it seems to be staying about the same but we go back for new measurements on Monday and I will be almost 30 weeks. The dr hasn't given me much information other than the placenta may not be doing it's job and it is causing a bad environment for the baby.... Reason for the small weight and measurements. I believe I may be admitted on Monday if the baby still has not grown or grown very little at that point. Dr said she may be netter out than in if she is not growing! Very scary thing to head at this point since she is not even two pounds. Anyone has any experiences like this?
  • @teransands14 I am currently on hospital bed rest for low fluid and low growth of baby. We also have our 2week follow up growth scan on Monday. If she hasn't grown, we will be going for a c section on Wednesday as that is the day we hit 32 weeks. That is unless baby starts not tolerating the low fluid before then. My fluid is critically low down to 3 cm today.
  • @knwilliams01 oh wow! I hope you can keep her in there!

How long did they wait to put you in the hospital? I'm just wondering if they will give another two weeks to check growth and keep up the two weekly fluid checks or next step is hospital... He said they would need to take her out if she wasn't growing I just don't know how soon and I'm trying to prepare
  • @teransands14 I was admitted when the low fluid was discovered because it was <5. According to the high risk doctors here (maternal fetal medicine), they admit anyone with an amniotic fluid index less than 5 or 6, depending on who you talk to.
  • Ok thank you! My fluid is not that low... High risk dr seems to be a little worried about the fluid but mostly that the low fluid has caused her not to grow like she should. Maybe there will be not hospitalization yet since my fluid is not that low... Just driving me crazy to wait until Monday!
  • teransands14 I got pretty much the same news earlier this week, except they didn't say how low the fluid was, just that it wasn't dangerous. My doctor was also very specific that fluid levels can fluctuate a lot... even if they'd done the ultrasound 5 minutes later it might have been different. My baby is in 17th percentile for overall size (about 2 weeks behind), and they said 10th percentile or under is cause for concern. No bed rest, but I was told to take it easy. I'm having weekly non-stress tests to monitor Baby's heartbeat and check that the placenta is working OK, as well as extra ultrasounds. It is nerve wracking and scary when you can't tell for yourself what's going on in between tests. This situation combined with placenta previa means I will have a c-section at 37 weeks, if not sooner. Like what you said, I was told they might decide Baby's growing potential is better outside than in, but there's so much that has to be carefully weighed before they make this decision. I wish you luck!
