pronouncing/spelling name....

I love the name Louis for a little boy. BUT everyone I have asked pronounces it 'Lewis', not 'Louie' like I do. it will drive me bonkers having to correct and explain that it's actually Lou-E, not Lewis. Should I even bother? I don't want my child to have a name nobody can seem to pronounce. Also, I'm within three hours from St. Louis, MO. And everyone says 'St. Lewis'. Am I the one saying it wrong?!

Re: pronouncing/spelling name....

  • Would you be against spelling it "Louie" to avoid confusion? I'm definitely guilty saying I would pronounce Louis as Lewis.

  • I'm only 15 minutes out of St. Louis (Lewis). We only say St. (Louie) as a nn for the city. Make sense?
I would definitely pronounce his names as Lewis instead of Louie.

I thought about that! Or, maybe just Lou? I still have some months to go! Just trying to see how others would pronounce it. Thank you!
  • I believe that both pronunciations are correct. I would say Lewis always. I do not know anyone in theses parts that would say Lewie.
I would just spell it louie.
  • I would think louis (loo-ee) in a French speaking area otherwise I'd think lewis

I would just spell it louie.

  • Both pronunciations are correct. If you're French, I'd say screw it and spell it Louis. If you're not French, Louie is valid.

The only time I pronounce Louis like Louie is if I know for sure it's French. Otherwise I'd say "Lewis".

Edit: I just realized that sounds confusing since Louis is a French spelling. I guess I meant a French person vs. an American person.
  • Most people will pronounce it Lewis. This is a family name of mine and many males in my family have this as a first or middle name. People will say "can I call you Louie?" Or "do you go by Louie?" Nobody assumes Louis is pronounced Louie. That's a French thing.

  • I've always pronounced Louis as Louie
  • Louis is Lewis to me. Never knew it was actually pronounced like Louie. And after reading the comments unless you know French or are in a French speaking area then I'm assuming most would pronounce it wrong. I would spell it Louie if that's how you want it said.

  • Thanks for all the comments. I just grew up saying Louie because of all the history the name has, so I only ever heard it pronounced as Louie. BUT I have never actually met anyone with the name, which I like, so it's still on the short list....just maybe spelled as Louie! Haha
  • Louis is Lewis to me. Louie is Louie.
  • I know two people named Louis ( and I live a couple hours from St. Louis) and both pronounce it Lewis.

  • Louis is definitely Louie... Can't imagine who would think it's Lewis
  • I pronounce Louis like Louie when I think of Louis Armstrong. Otherwise, I second guess myself on the pronunciation.

    Most people. In America anyhow.
  • I've known people who pronounce it both ways. However, French is an official language in Canada. I don't like the Louie spelling - to me, that looks like a nn. I think people will only have to be corrected once. As I'm, it's Louis, like Louis XIV, Louis XVI, Louis Vuitton. :). I don't think anyone pronounces Louis Vuitton Lewis Vuitton (at least I hope not).

It's like Louis CK. Maybe the uneducated Americans.
  • I would probably vacillate, but end up guessing Lewis or asking the mother.
