pottery barn?

I am a FTM and fell in love with the Kendall line with Pottery Barn. I am justifying the price because it seems like the furniture will grow with the kids from birth to college. I would rather buy something nice and once instead of something cheap and have to make several purchases over the years.

Have you purchased any of their furniture? Are you pleased with their quality? What are your thoughts?

Re: pottery barn?

  • I would look for similar items at other stores. I loved a glider there (did not want a wooden one) when I was preg with DS but they started at like $1200 and that did not even include an ottoman. I found a very similar one at Buy Buy baby with the ottoman for like $499. We used a 20% off coupon which covered tax and delivery. I was also able to choose the fabric - but it did take awhile to come in! I love it!

  • I looked online at the Kendall line.  The crib seems reasonably priced compared to others I've seen.  IMO the dresser is way overpriced.  One thing I would encourage you to think about: just because the furniture will stylistically work from birth to college doesn't mean it will actually hold up.  Kids are very hard on even high quality furniture.

It is beautiful though, so if you can afford then go for it.  If it were my money, I would shop around more.
  • I worked at PBK when I was pregnant with my first child. We have the Kendall crib and I love it. I would hold out on really nice furniture until they are a little bit older. Every once in a while PBK will do a sample sale and you can get the pieces cheaper. They are beat up because kids run into them with strollers and other toys, but sometimes they are in great condition. You can go to the store and asked to be put on a list and they will call you when the furniture item is on sale or when they have a floor sample available.

  • Love PB and would buy everything there if we could afford it.

  • I was surprised by some of the furniture at Buy Buy Baby. Really good looking and much less expensive. Theoretically PB stuff could last till college, but there's always a chance you get sick of it, it gets trashed, kids want a bigger bed, etc...That being said, you can't go wrong!
  • We have that crib, dresser and shelf for my first. LOVE it! We bought the crib used and it's still in great condition even though we're its second family. The dresser came from the PB outlet and was a great price. We didn't buy the extra piece that sits on top of the dresser to turn the dresser into the changing table and it hasn't been a problem.

If you're going to buy a lot from there, open the credit card and you'll earn cash rewards to use at the store. You can also register for stuff, list your shower date (not your due date) as the "event date" and get the registry completion discount.
  • But the Kendall doesn't turn into a twin bed if that's what you're looking for. Maybe the new ones do but ours only coverts to a toddler bed.
  • I LOVE Pottery Barn Kids, if you sign online, every day they have deals. like today I received a 60% in some products.

If you have the money I say go for it, its your child, your pregnancy.

  • The crib is on sale for $399, that's not a bad price at all. I'm not sure what you mean by it growing with your child though, doesn't look like it goes beyond toddler. The dresser is pretty plain for as expensive as it is. You could probably find something similar at IKEA.

We ended up going to a local kids furniture store and found a great price on a crib from the Baby's Dream furniture line. Many of their cribs do convert into full size beds if you buy the kit. They are nice solid pieces of furniture.
  • I love PBK! Also, if you create a registry with them you get either 10-15% off after the date you input as your shower date. I created an online registry (though didn't share it with anyone) and bought the stuff I wanted with the discount. Also, the Pottery Barn Kids outlets have great sales if there is one in your area.

Thank you for pointing that out! I thought it converted to a full size bed! This set it out. :-)

I was more or less asking if anyone knew about the quality and the longevity of this type of furniture. Is it worth the price?

  • PBK has so many cute things! I find most things they carry are overpriced, though $399 for a crib sounds decent if it lasts. We tend to look at thrift stores and antique stores for antique, solid wood dressers because if they've lasted 30+ years they should last me, too. Furniture today just isn't made the same anymore. Obviously I wouldn't buy an old crib because of safety standards but all of my kids have antique dressers that I painted and we have a vintage changing table that I painted black and we set white baskets on - so chic!

Our current crib is okay. It was like $100-150 (can't remember exactly but somewhere in that range) from Target. It's really sturdy but a pain in the butt to adjust so we just keep the mattress on the lowest setting. My biggest beef is just ease in taking it apart (won't fit through doorways).

The crib is one thing I take the longest time to research, after car seat. I wish I had taken longer to look at display models rather than just buying online.

  • I love PBK, but it's expensive. Any other good options out there besides Buy, buy, baby?
  • Target online has some cute stuff. My parents got a crib from there to keep at their house. Our target has 2-3 in the store but they have a lot more online.
  • DaVinci makes cribs and their reasonably priced as well as compliant with the strictest safety standards re: toxic materials. Love PBK. I think we are gping to go with a cheaper crib (from DaVinci), get bedding from PBK and dressers from Ikea.

I used Potterybarn furniture since I had my first 8 years ago, I'm now on my third. Would never buy anything else! The quality is worth it!
  • We are going with Jenny Lind brand for a crib, almost the same styles as PB only half the price.
  • I love pottery barn!!! I'm getting my entire elephant themed room decorations from there. My family has shopped at pottery barn for a long time, remember being younger and pickings from pottery barn teen magazines.... Defiantly great quality... I wouldn't bank on keeping furniture forever. But if that's the line you like then get it!!!! You can always resell when finished!!
  • To the OP, did you buy this crib? It's on sale now and I'm wondering about the quality, too!

  • I just bought a 3 piece pottery barn kids furniture set on Craig's list (dresser, changing table and crib). I got an amazing deal. We also bought our rocker from an ad on Craig's list. You still have time to get the nursery ready, it's worth searching for consignment pottery barn furniture or waiting for the set you want to go on sale.
  • We bought our PB crib on Craigslist and matching dresser at the outlet. HUGE savings! Just be careful mixing new and used prices because a few years ago they changed the color of the white from an antique/ off white to a more pure/ bright white
  • We just bought the Kendall because of the sale! The dresser is much more expensive so we're waiting till another month to buy that but that'll be the only big stuff we have to buy ourselves so we decided to go for it.
  • @shihtzufan are you happy with the quality?
  • I bought the Kendall crib, searched everywhere and it was the only one I really loved. Haven't decided on the dresser because of the cost but we have very specific size requirements and I am having a hard time finding a dresser other than the Kendall that will work. They are either too tall, too long or too short.
  • @amk013 we haven't set it up yet but saw it in the store and we were very happy with the quality. DH is an engineer and very particular about build quality of things we buy and he gave it his seal of approval.
  • Thanks for the feedback! I think we're going to get it, too! @shihtzufan oh, and my husband is an engineer, also, so I'll be sure to tell him that your hubby says it's engineer approved!
