Sleep changes!

My LO has been sleeping in her own room since day one. She's 11 weeks. Took her couple weeks but she finally started sleeping pretty good getting six to nine hours out of her at night. This went on since she was three weeks old and now she's 11 weeks and all of a sudden waking up every three to four hours. She'll eat a few ounces, get a new diaper and fall right asleep. She's not sleeping extra during the day just takes a morning nap,an afternoon nap and then will fall asleep in the car but nothing really has changed. I can't complain because a four hour stretch isn't too bad just came out of no where all of a sudden.Any advice?

Re: Sleep changes!

  • My LO is 14 weeks, and is also doing that.  There are nights he would sleep up to 8 hours at a time, and now he is up pretty much every 4 hours to eat.  I think it could be a growth spurt, and I have been told from other moms that it may be a good idea to start cereal soon.  I am going to ask our pediatrician at our next visit!

  • Consider yourself lucky mama!  It sounds like if she's eating extra she's having a growth spurt.  My experience with DS1 was that as he got older, his growth spurt periods disrupted his sleep more and more.  She's only 11 weeks, but it is possible she's going through the "4 month sleep regression" a bit early.  This is when their sleep cycle becomes less like a baby and more like yours (more frequent periods of light and deep sleep).  It wakes them up easily and they have to learn to put themselves back to sleep - all you can do is comfort them, stick to what you've been doing (don't introduce sleep crutches like excessive rocking or nursing back to sleep every time they wake-up) and wait it out.  For a growth spurt, they wake to eat because they are hungry.  It will pass.  With sleep regressions, it's a challenge, but all you really can't do much to change it - it's normal and all babies go through it.

  • I'll have to ask the pediatrician next time too about cereal! She just went not long ago so she'll be going in another month and a half or so. She likes her crib and isn't fussing to be held or anything so it's just a new diaper a bottle and she's right back to bed! Thanks!
  • I've heard this is completely normal. It's like a fourth month old "thing" for babies who had been sleeping good in the past. Almost all babies start doing this around this time but it passes. I know you're supposed to wait til baby is 6 months old to introduce cereal and solid foods but I'm just relaying what my pediatrician said
  • It sounds like your LO is normally a great sleeper!  DD has only ever done like 5 hours max, and recently she's back to waking up every 2-3 hours.  She's 11 weeks today, so maybe it's just their age right now?  Hang in there!

  • Thanks everyone I guess this whole sleep regression around that age is what it must be. It's just so strange! After a few nights of that she slept 11 hours straight for a couple nights! LO is just going to do what she wants I guess!
  • Also Google Wonder Weeks, she is probably starting Leap 4!!!
  • I will thanks! I feel like there's just no rhyme or reason to her sleeping right now because night before last night she slept 7to130 2to530 then 530to8 and this past night she did 645to445..with only eating 4oz before bed and it's usually 8oz!!!
  • I completely disagree with the comment about not introducing "sleep crutches." This is an 11 week old baby we're talking about.. Feed her every time you even think hunger is a possibility. Why not quickly nurse a baby back to sleep? It's easy, works wonders, and she'll probably sleep longer with a full tummy, vs continuing to try to tell you every 20 min that's she's hungry because you're not understanding what she wants.
