Infertility

TTC after Varicocelectomy

My husband and I have been TTC for 17 months.  Went to the doctor after about 6 months of trying due to our ages.  My husband was referred to a specialist that diagnosed bilateral varicocele's.  He recommended surgery, so he had the surgery on January 15th.  Just wondering who all out there has also experienced this cause of fertility, and wanting to see if there are any pregnancy success stories after having the correction surgery.  Thanks!

Re: TTC after Varicocelectomy

  • Hello

I was in the exact same situation as you.  It took my husband and I 2 years to seek help for infertility, it turned out he needed the varicocele surgery.  They told us that it would take 3 to 5 years for the surgery to have some effect on the sperm if it ever did.  We were desperate to have babies so we turned to IVF and conceived twins on our first try.  When the twins were 10 months, I found out I was pregnant again NATURALLY, the only explanation I have for that is that the surgery did work and in less than 2 years.  Hope my story helps and let me know if you have any questions, I'll be glad to help you.

  • That's awesome thank you for your response!!  I spoke with a friend whose husband is a urologist and he said 50% of men will get their wives pregnant within a year after the surgery.  He also said to have another SA done in 3 months and if no luck by 6 months to look into further options.  So since we are only a month out, we will just keep on keeping on and see what happens!  It's so good to hear that other people have gone through the same things!  Thanks again!  And congratulations on the pregnancy!

  • You're very welcome, I had to be very patient but at the end, it pay off.

  • My husband had the surgery twice, about 5 years ago. We had one natural mc. Did IUI about 4 failed times. IVF fresh, failed. Scheduling FET for summer. Never in that 5 years had a natural anything again. Surgery for him was not worth it for us. IVF with ICSI is what we have done. We have 6 frozen embryos. Good luck to you.
  • We were also tested after 10 months of ttc naturally. All of my test came out fine, and my husbands SA yielded low results across the board. He was diagnosed with bi-lateral varicocele, and had the subsequent surgery. It did not yield any change, and this was a little over 2 years ago. All of his hormone tests are normal, so it is now unknown.  We tried IVF/ISCI a year ago, and it failed. I did not have anything to freeze, and they suggested we try a micro-tese this time around, as we had a major issue with fertilization(which is due to the sperm quality). They are basically going straight into the testes to see if we can get healthier "swimmers" if you will. I am currently on week 3 of BCP, and scheduled to start my Lupron on April 13th for IVf#2. Crossing my fingers that his surgery will yield better results than ours. We just happened to be the 50% where the varicocele surgery did not help  :(

    GOOD LUCK, to you.
