Is this a mandatory test in pregnancy? Ive heard about it before but nothing has been mentioned to me by doctor or midwife to make an appointment for this testing

I wouldn't worry, you will probably here about it at your next appointment. I thought it was typically done at 28 weeks, so you'd be told about it at the 24 week appointment. Perhaps call your doc if you've already had you 24 week appt. and haven't heard about it. Not sure why everyone is taking it so early. I guess if you were high risk for GD or had a suspect urine test they'd have to you take it earlier. But then it seems to me you'd want to take it again later in the pregnancy just in case GD has developed later. Dr. Google tells me that GD usually develops after the 24th week of pregnancy, so I assume any negative test before 24 weeks would really need to be repeated.

I asked my doc yesterday when I scheduled my test. He didn't seem to care either way. So, I'm definitely fasting so I won't fail my 1 hour. ;)

He is also testing me at 24 weeks instead of 28 weeks; which I thought was odd. With both of my daughters I tested at 28 weeks.
  • My last pregnancy was four years ago, and I'm pretty sure it was fasting. The receptionist told me "You don't have to fast anymore". Maybe it will make it not suck so bad if it's not on an empty stomach. Mine is Thursday!!!

I took an early one at 10 weeks since I am on a glucophage for my pcos. I was able to come off of it. I will have another test at 28 weeks.
  • The don't have you fast because they want to see how your body handles the sugar with your regular diet.

The 3 hour is totally different and you would have to fast for that one. :)

As I said, last two pregnancies, I had to fast for the one hour. It just threw me for a loop when they told me I didn't have to this time. I even asked my friend, who is an OB in another state, and she even said, "we have all our patients fast." So, guess every doc is different.
This is my first pregnancy so I don't know how standards in this regard may have changed over time... but recommendations very well could've been different with your prior pregnancies than they are today. I was told not to fast, but avoid excessive sugar/carb breakfast. OB said fasting could throw the test off and make it difficult to interpret
  • My directions are just not to eat or drink anything between chugging the Orange stuff and having my blood drawn - other than that, no restrictions. I have to drink the glucola at 8:15 in the morning so I'll just wait to eat breakfast until afterwards.
  • I have mine on Monday (24 weeks), doc told me nurse would be in touch with directions, but I hadn't heard anything all week and left a message Friday, but of course, they'd left for the day.
Guess I'll grab something with protein as a snack and head to my 8:45 appt...

  • I was told to fast this time and last time. I made it for early in the morning so I am not too concerned about fasting.
  • I'm going in for mine tomorrow and was told not to fast. Given that I've always gotten nauseous if I don't eat breakfast, I won't be fasting. I'll be 21w4d.
My MFM wanted me to do it early because the baby was measuring over a week ahead at the anatomy scan. But my OB didn't seem concerned since there's been a lot of debate about my due date since the beginning. Crossing my fingers to not get sick from the test...and of course to not have GD.
  • We got 10+ inches of snow last night, test rescheduled for next appt because half the staff wasn't there.
At least now I have instructions and can do the drink at home!
Best of luck to you ladies taking it this week!

  • So I'm coming up on this test somewhat soon and I heard and read from you ladies and some of my friends that this test is not so much a breeze and it's hard to keep down or makes you sick or whatnot. My sister in law lives an all organic lifestyle and I mean .. EVERYTHING she went to do her glucose test BUT she substituted the drink for an organic juice same amount of sugar and they let her I'm thinking of trying this but only because this pregnancy I cannot keep down anything orange flavored not even candy and I'm not sure they have it as a different flavor... Any suggestions ?
  • @tealbee‌ I know there are other flavors (fruit punch and grape) from hearing from friends complain about their pregnancies and GD tests, but I also know that my particular hospital apparently ONLY has the orange flavor. If you're in a bigger metro area I would ask your drs office if they have the other flavors available and if not, if they mind you contacting other practices to see if they let you purchase another flavor from them (in cooperation with your Dr, of course). That might work. It depends on how uptight your drs office and other practices are.

  • I do my test at next visit mine says no fasting required just nothing sweet 2 hrs prior to doing test.
  • My midwife would let me do regular juice but I'm opting to finger prick after meals. I've heard this is the most accurate since I don't eat much sugar. Husband is going to do it too. We are kind of dorks and looking forward to see what foods do what.
