18 weeks and barely showing

Hi all Moms, I'm 22 and going to be a first time mom. I was always skinny prior to pregnancy (usually size 2/4 or small), I am 18 weeks and 5 days today and my stomach is barely showing. The doctor says that it's fine and that soon enough I will be getting bigger and showing, I'm a bit worried but my husband thinks I'm over reacting and should just relax and wait. I have barely gained 2 lb since I found out I was pregnant. My jeans are getting tight so I have to unbutton them and get a bigger size shirts, but other than that I don't really see any weight gain. Did anyone experience this before? I have my big ultrasound appointment in a week and a half when they scan the baby to make sure that everything is okay, so I'm just hoping to get by until then without freaking out. Thanks

Re: 18 weeks and barely showing

  • Are you tall? I am 5' 8". I will be 20 weeks tomorrow with my third baby and you can barely tell I'm pregnant. If you are tall or have a long torso everything kind of shifts up before it starts to stick out. Even if you aren't though, try not to worry! Everybody is different and you have a fun appt coming up!

  • I wouldn't worry it's your first baby. If the dr says your fine then don't stress.
  • I'm 5'2" and at the moment I'm 116. Trying to keep calm as much as possible. Thanks
  • Im 19 weeks and barely showing. I have gained like 13 pounds and look chunky. :)
  • 19 weeks and hardly showing at all I'm 5'3 and it kinda just looks like I'm fat. This is also my first baby and apparently it's normal. Which is fine with me. Less strech marks. I didn't throw up at all and somehow managed to lose weight. I also don't eat like a pig but I'm almost back to my pre-preg weight.
  • I am 19 weeks and I just feel bloated my stomach looks normal I can still fit in my jeans I have only gained 5 lbs so far.. I too hope everything is ok thank god I go in next Tuesday's for my ultra sound
  • I'm almost 20 weeks (5'9" and FTM) and am not showing at all. Everyone keeps telling me that they popped out as soon as they hit the 5 month mark but I'm still waiting on my baby belly. My OB said that because I'm tall and fit that I may not really ever show like a lot of women do or I may just show really late in pregnancy. Part of me really wants the baby belly. The other part of me likes that my "fat clothes" still mostly fit. lol!

  • Im 5'3 and im 16 weeks. Ive gained 11lbs my dr told me ive gained too much weight. But I dont see it my tummy just feels bloated. Idk this is my 1st pregnancy. Kinda confused
  • I'm 5'9 and 20 weeks. I got nothin' but a food baby going on. People like to think of it as a baby bump and I gently remind them that I'm fat, LOL. I hear a lot of people say they don't show until like 26-27 weeks then they explode.  I'd keep calm for now. :)

Yeah, same here. I am 5'8 also and I have a long torso so it doesn't show much until the uterus moves up a bit. Now I have a belly at 20 weeks but I appear smaller than most people because I was also thin 2/4 to start and on the taller side. Do not worry about not showing. People are weird and make you feel bad for now showing much but maybe it's just because they are jealous, who knows. All that matters is that you and the baby are healthy and size of your belly doesn't mean indicate much or anything at this point. Ignore all the things people say. Just listen to what your doctor says. Plus you are 22 and in a better position age wise to have kids! I'm 37 and it gets more complicated at this age.
  • I'm the same way. This is my second child but 14years apart. I still wear my same clothes at 18 weeks and I don't feel or look pregnant. I'm also concerned as I have been under tremendous stress. I'm anxiously waiting my 20week ultra sound so I can be reassured the baby is ok. I've read many posts where people don't gIn much weight until later in the pregnancy so I hope this is our case! Good luck!
  • You're good. Every woman and pregnancy is different
  • This is my first baby and I'm 19 weeks today. I have only gained two lbs and I am 5'7. I just did the ultrasound and baby measures healthy. I was worried like you because I compared my little pooch to everyone's baby bump but my doctor reassured me that baby's are the best parasite. They will take from you before getting nothing. So no worries! It's all about your body type and ab muscles. You will be seeing it pop out soon enough, the baby is about to double in size within just a month.
  • If the doctor said don't worry than don't worry. Everyone's body is different and with your first it takes a while to show. Relax.
  • I'm not tall and 18 weeks and barely showing, I think it's totally normal! :)
  • Me too... I'm not tall, 18.5 weeks and barely showing... I gained 11 lbs since pregnancy, but still not showing at all.. I get worried from time to time but the hubby reminds what the doc told last time we saw him.. the doc was like... You may not look preggo but there a tiny baby growing in you that looks perfectly healthy right now... Lol
  • 28 weeks, healthy baby, still in all pre pregnancy clothes and barely showing.

I'm feeling the weight and believe me, I couldn't imagine feeling this uncomfy with a massive bump. Don't wish it away, enjoy it whilst you can!
  • It has been freaking me out a little bit as well..that I am 19 and a half weeks and still barely showing. It helps to remember that, like a lot of others have said, every pregnancy and woman is different. The more I read and the more I check out these forums, the better I feel because it confirms that I am not the only one! I have been stressed a bit lately too so that makes it a little worse sometimes tho! It is easy to freak out and worry about things, especially now! I hope everyone's minds can be at ease! Remember everyone is different!!! :) God Bless ladies!

  • This is my 3rd baby, and I don't look pregnant at all. I was hoping I'd be showing by now, but I've always been really slow to get my "pregnant belly". However, when my belly "pops" it gets huge quickly. As long as you're feeling well and baby growing as expected, then don't worry about what you look like. You'll get there soon enough.

  • I wouldn't worry!!! I'm 5'2" and 120lbs at 18 weeks. I really haven't gained any weight. I've maintained the entire time. I don't really have much of a bump either, but pants are starting to get uncomfortable. So, I went and got a bellaband from target. I think it's because I'm a first time mom & I have a retroverted uterus (tilted backwards). If your doc isn't worried, I wouldn't be either. I think this is pretty common for FTM's.
  • Thank you ladies, this makes me feel so much better. I am too still wearing most of my regular clothes, and bought a few maternity things just to be more comfortable. Also I still don't feel the baby moving which is okay according to everyone but other moms have been saying that they have started feeling the baby.
  • I'm at 17 weeks and I still don't feel any baby movement either which is kinda upsetting because like you, I've heard other moms say this is about the time they start feeling movement; but every time I have an appointment the ultrasound tech has a hard time getting a good picture of my baby because it moves so much (he's very active) so I'm not too worried about it. Your babies probably just too small for you to feel anything yet. I haven't gained much weight either since pregnant, maybe only 2-4 pounds. Im 5'2 and about 100 lbs right now so I'm pretty small; my bump is pretty tiny and all my jeans still fit except I have to unbutton them. But my obgyn said it was normal for me not to be gaining as much weight as other women, he said since I'm pretty small I probably won't gain too much weight throughout my pregnancy, and the weight I do gain will be all baby weight. So rest easy! Being on the smaller side just makes you a little bit of a late show-er but it'll come eventually
  • It will happen soon enough! I was barely showing and two days later, I can't deny the nice bump. So cute!
  • With my first I didn't start to show till about 20 weeks... Didn't even need any maternity clothes till after that point. Don't stress! I'm almost 17 weeks now with my second and still in my prepregnancy clothes and you can't really tell that I'm pregnant just looks like I may have gained a couple pounds. I also haven't gained any weight.
  • Well today my stomach is finally bigger and more pregnant like haha also I started feeling the baby kicking yesterday, it feels awesome can't wait for it to be more often and stronger
  • Lucky you! I'm 23, this is my first pregnancy, I was always thin as well. Size 0-1. Currently I am 17 weeks along and have already had to buy maternity pants (2 weeks ago!) lol none of my pants fit anymore and the belly band no longer works as well (it's because of all the salty food I have been craving ). I guess I put it on not only in my belly but also my thighs. I'm not quite sure how much weight I have gained though.

Don't worry unless your doctor says you should. EVERY woman's body is different and reacts to pregnancy differently. Some show a lot sooner (or later) than others.
  • I have a pair of pregnancy pants and have a dress and two shirts. Yesterday I ordered a pair of jeans because mine are getting too tight haha I love the store motherhood, they have sales all the time and some really nice clothes.
