Roughen nipples??

I'm a first time breast feeder and have heard to toughen up my nipples prior to giving birth. Is this something I really need to do?

  • Yes! Best advice I've gotten. I take a little Lanoline and work it in there. Sounds weird I know but worth it. No pain during breast feeding.

  • I didn't with my first and successfully breastfed for a year. The thought of "toughening" them makes me queasy. They are so sensitive as it is! Ouch!
  • Leave your nipples alone. They will toughen up just fine when you start breastfeeding.

  • Definitely not. I had a couple issues in the beginning but pushed through and was just fine. This is the job they are meant to do :)
  • Please don't really go ask at home depot.
I've nursed 4 and the last two months of pregnancy I will towel them a bit vigorously while drying off out of the shower... Didn't do it with 1preg and they bled... Seems to be enough. Got the advice from a ma with 9 kids...
  • My mother brought this up when we met the lactation consultant at hospital pre-reg. (husband is over seas so mom is being dragged around) and the lactation nurse said not to do this, nipple stimulation and sex (specifically orgasms and sperm) can bring on labor. Unless you are ready for baby.
Mine are not all that sensitive to begin with which makes me worry that I won't produce milk... One of those crazy first time mom fears/rationals.
  • Heck no. Your nipples don't deserve that.

  • I wouldn't recommend doing anything painful to your nipples. I have been rubbing coconut oil on mine in the shower to keep the skin moist, but that's the extent of my nipple "preparation".
  • Not necessary, back in the 70's this was a common recommendation.  Now they have figured out that it's not really helpful anyway.  Read up on what to expect and talk to people on the breast feeding board here.

  • Ouch! I appreciate the thought behind it but it seems like this is something that should occur naturally, though sandpaper is an interesting suggestion
