Baby Names

New school year, new "interesting" names

Because I'm endlessly fascinated by the names that turn up in my class. This year I have:

Kausious (boy)
Antaysta (pronounced Ann-Tay-Shuh girl)
Coltyn
Jaedyn
Taelar
Kayce (pronounced Kay-See)

Is the "ae" thing a new trend? It seems to be turning up a lot where I am for "creative" spelling.

There were of course lots of lovely names too. I have one girl Lynette, which isn't common in that age group, I really like it on her.

Re: New school year, new "interesting" names

  • Are the parents really young? I must admit, when I was younger and thought of baby names, I spelled them with creative spellings. I thought it was cool and cute. I would never do that to my child now.
    Taelar = Taylor? That's awful.
    Kayce is "Case" not Kay-cee.

  • I had a student named Damaann. Pronounced like 'da man.' I wish I were joking (and that I'd held on to an assignment or two of his to give you all proof).
  • Ugh those are awful
  • In my daughter's class, there's a
    Koltyn
    Natylee
    Westin
    Addyson

I think I just peed! That's literally what I thought too.

Who does that to a child! As PP said, it makes me think they all have undereducated teenaged mothers. I would technically be a young mother since I'm in my 20's but I refuse to name LO anything so undignified and silly.
OP- I love the name Lynette too.

    Also...
I keep seeing "Laikyn" how TF do you even say that?
  • I had a Quamron (Cameron) in class... yikes
  • My husbands little sister went to grade school with a "La-A" pronounced "LaDashA" oy vey....

I knew a La-Ka pronounced "Ladashka" ...very strange.

Unusual, but legit and often prounounced "Sinjun".
  • This year I've had Se.maj, Lu.cky (boy), and Kai.chelle. But every year I get a couple of interesting names/spellings.
I know a lot of Semaj's. It's James spelled backwards. Reminds me of the Neveah trend.

  • OH how I wish I could share names! The things I see in healthcare. I children's healthcare. But I can't because of patient privacy.

But yes - the AE thing is very popular. And if you can find a way to fit in X,Y, or Z, then you are super-unique. In the same way everyone else is trying to be unique. Example: Jaxzyn (Jackson). No, I haven't seen that spelling, but it's probably not far away.

  • I just... how do people fall in love with these names? I try not to judge, but it just seems like some people like to swirl their alphabet magnets on the fridge around and around and just pick whatever stands out to them first.

    My thoughts:

Spell your child's name however you want, under 2 conditions. ONE - It's your fault if I can't pronounce it, not mine. TWO - If the spelling is phonetically incorrect, you should have to talk to a social worker to make sure you're a competent parent before you take that child home. Example = Naming a child Marie and insisting her name is pronounced Remy. (I'm making up the example, but I've seen several where consonants were not in the right place for how they were pronouoncing it)

I wasn't trying to offend anyone. I was responding to the PP who said she knew someone with this name IRL and I have seen it written IRL myself. I'm not claiming that was on the girl's birth certificate, but it was how she was choosing to spell her name (Ladashka is definitely a used name...maybe she heard the "myth" about this name spelling and liked it...who knows. Not my place to judge).

Anyway, I'm sorry if my comment seemed racially insensitive. I teach in the rural South and am used to hearing ridiculously crazy names from both white and black people, so I didn't view it as a race thing.
  • There was a girl in one of my classes in college that was "Ladasha". The teacher doing roll call called her "Leah" and she promptly corrected the teacher. I went to the online class roster to prove it since I knew the name was an urban legend. Unfortunately, her name was on there as "Le'a". I was so disappointed. Oh, and she was white, so I'm not sure how racial stereotypes come into play with this name.

  • I hate the whole Neveah and Semaj thing. Especially Neveah. Like what? Is her sister gonna be Lleh and you're going to try to convinced me it's pronounced "Leah" ...no.
I've seen LaDynasty which could easily be mistaken for Lady Nasty...thank your mom for that one! And Nolledge...like knowledge (I don't even need a joke for that one).
  • The craziest names I ever saw were on Maury. Sha'Diamond named her daughter Sha'Miracle. I wish I was lying.
  • I just met a Connor yesterday...it was a girl :|

I had a student last year named Sha'Diamond. She usually went by just Diamond or Di though.
