Fluoride toothpaste

I had to buy toothpaste for DS today and noticed that the fluoride kids toothpaste says it is for ages 2+.

Does anyone's LO brush with fluoride toothpaste? I haven't tried asking DS to spit yet; he still uses infant toothpaste. We saw the pediatrician yesterday and she said nothing about it. Just curious if other kids his age can spit and/or use big kid fluoride toothpaste.

Re: Fluoride toothpaste

  • When DS went to the dentist back in December they said to keep him away from Florida toothpaste until he could with confidence not swallow the toothpaste. I think that DS could spit but not enough to also not swallow most of the toothpaste. We will stay on the toddler toothpaste for a while longer yet.

  • Our dentist told us to switch to fluoride toothpaste even though DS doesn't spit it out, just not to use too much. He said the amount they swallow is not harmful.
  • We were told by our dentist to use toothpaste with fluoride because DS has teeth that are very close together. So we floss first then only use smallest amount of toothpaste because at this point he would never spit it out, he likes the taste too much.

  • Yikes, I have never flossed DS' teeth! How do you do it @OakTreeMommy‌ since I can't imagine that is easy.

  • My aunt is a dental hygienist and she said to use fluoride free toothpaste until dd learns low to spit. She said the fluoride can cause white spots on adult teeth

This. She's getting better at spitting now.

  • We are still using fluoride free. One reason is the spitting, she can't do it yet. Also I've heard conflicting research about the safety of fluoride so I'd rather her not have it till she can use it the correct way.
