AFP is 3.72

I am 18 weeks with DD #2 and just received the call that my AFP came back positive for neural tube defects at 3.72. I am terrified and waiting for the referral for the level 2 U/S. Has anyone else had an AFP this high and gone on to have a healthy baby? Any info would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you!

DS1 came back with high AFP. Do know that this is just a risk factor. A risk factor means that 1 person out of x will be impacted. It isn't a "positive" in the sense of a definite It really is poor phrasing from a medical side. I remember how brutal the period of uncertainty was for me, so I am sorry that you are going through this. For me, my AFP was 2.84 which meant a 1:160 risk factor. After a level-2 ultrasound (anatomy scan) that risk factor changed to 1:1600 because of minimal other indicators. My son was born seemingly perfectly healthy. As he got bigger, we were able to identify a small dimple on his lower back that may indicate a closed NTD (no doctor will confirm since you can't tell what the story really was but that doesn't seem to have any impact on his well-being. He's an awesome, active 4-year-old.
