Sensitive cervix

i'm 9w today and have been getting weekly ultrasounds because of my MC history (3)....this has never happened in past pregnancies but each time I get the US I have brown within discharge when I wipe for a few days after. Just curious if anyone is having a similiar issue and what their doctor has said. It's frustrating and scary more than anything.

Re: Sensitive cervix

  • I have never experienced that, but I have heard that the vagina has extra blood flow and is more susceptible to potential bleeding ( I'm thinking kinda like you're nose), so maybe that's all it is.

  • You may have cervical ectopy, a harmless condition in which the cells normally on the inside of your cervix extend to the outside of your cervix due to the higher levels of estrogen. This is very common in pregnancy and can cause spotting throughout your pregnancy due to the sensitive nature of these cells, especially after an internal exam, sex, or a bowel movement. You can read more here: https://gynaeonline.com/cervical_erosion.htm. I had the same issue after my first appointment (and Pap smear) and was concerned, so the doctor did a cervical exam and was able to see the cells and the cervical ectopy. This will cause no harm to you or the baby and usually disappears within 3-6 months after the baby is born and your hormones go more back to normal.
  • I get the discharge after my husband and I, you know. Sorry if TMI, but just wanted to put your mind at ease. I called the dr just to be sure, and they said brown is fine. It only happens a little bit after each time, and we are now being more gentle, so it hasn't happened again.
  • I got it to for one day doctor said its fine
  • My mom, my sister, and I have all spotted in the first trimester. I saw my ob yesterday and she said it is perfectly normal. The cervix is engorged with blood right now so it is extra sensitive. Only worry if you have clotting, fill a pad, have terrible cramping, fever, and back pain. Other than that, everything is fine.
  • Thanks all, I've had 3 MCs in the past so definitely know the other side of things :( this has been much different though and it's great to hear the reassurance. Perhaps I will mention to my doc on Friday the cervical ectopy issue. Would like to have that exam to ease my mind. Have been at the specialist until week 9, they said
The spotting is normal and no real explanation for it. Releases to my regular doc so I will mention it there.

You're not the only one. I have a history of having 2 lazer cone biopsies and having what is termed a "friable cervix" which would mean a bit of a knock (sex) would lead to bleeding on and off. I've had several procedures to try to help, but it's just one of those things that I've had to just get used to. This seems to have intensified in my pregnancy and I now bleed during sex every time and my cervix feels like it's being rubbed with a cheese grater.

One of the things I found have helped are using menstrual sponges (google them!) or natural sea sponge cut into small pads. You insert them and they serve two purposes - a gentle barrier and something to catch the mess. They saved my sex life!
