Childbirth after Broken Pelvis

A few years ago I was crushed by a car while standing on the sidewalk. It broke my pelvis in two places among other things.

I've asked several doctors and looked online for information regarding childbirth after a broken pelvis, but I really haven't had any luck finding out if it's possible/safe or if my pelvis could break again during childbirth.

I know I have several more months to decide whether to try a vaginal delivery or have a c-section, but I would kind of like to figure it out sooner than later.

If any of you ladies have had experience with this your input would be much appreciated!

  • Oh my gosh!  What a terrible thing!

This is definitely something very specific and you should talk to your OB about, did you ask them and they didn't know!? They should refer you to an orthopedist if they don't know the answer. Every break is different and only someone familiar with your specific situation would know for sure.

  • Unfortunately, my orthopedist doesn't have any answers for me. He doesn't have any experience with a patient having a vaginal delivery after a pelvic break. I've talked with my OB and they don't have answers either. They told me to talk to my orthopedist. No one is really sure what will happen. I guess I may have to see a different orthopedist that might have some experience with this. Thanks for your advice.
  • Good luck, I hope you find some answers. I'm so sorry that happened to you.
  • My aunt had a vaginal delivery several years following a broken pelvis from a car accident. I believe she delivered over a month early though

My sister had her pelvis shattered and screwed and pinned back together.  It was really awful.  She hasn't had a baby but they have warned her a c section would be required.  Her pelvis is unable to expand or anything from all the pins still in there.  I'm not sure though about the pelvis rebreaking.  I would think it's all back together now and properly healed and shouldn't be more fragile?  I have no idea though.  Good luck
  • I'm in nursing school right now, I'm not a nurse quite yet so take what I say with a grain of salt. It's very possible you may break your tailbone in vaginal birth depending on the new shape of your pelvis and how it healed along with how the baby lays. Another thing, if your pelvis was broken severely you would have to have a c section birth. It all depends on how bad it was broken and if there were any problems while healing! If you have any questions let me know, I will try to answer as well as I can.

So sorry that happened to you! I don't know anything about this, but if you google it, looks like there's a decent amount of info and lots of women who were able to deliver naturally after a broken or fractured pelvis. Best of luck!
  • My cousin was in a terrible car accident and they told her she would never be able to have children. A couple years after all the surgeries (pins, screws the whole 9) she had 3 beautiful daughters (2, 4, & 5) that she carried full term. She tried vaginally with the first but didn't dialate so she did have 3 C-sections. She had mild discomfort while she was pregnant but overall she did it! Good luck. It is possible. :)
