Breastfeeding

Extended BF question

I am seriously planning on breastfeeding my baby once I have it and am curious about breastfeeding beyond a year. I have read a lot of things that say how studies show that we as humans or mammals (anthropologically or something, I have read too much to remember specific terms) naturally stop breast feeding when the molars come in (for humans between ages 5 and 7).

So my questions are :

1. How long do you plan to breastfeed?

2. How long did you only feed baby breast milk? (Talk about pregnancy brain, how the heck did I forget the term for this?!)

Re: Extended BF question

  • I mostly lurk here, but I originally planned to exclusively breast feed for 6 months before introducing solids, but to continue nursing until a year... After mastitis twice, a case of thrush and cracked bleeding nipples I had to use formula. I continued nursing but had to supplement too. I introduced solids around 5 months because he showed signs he was ready (watching family eat, making chewing motions, etc ). When I had mastitis I had to make goals of breastfeeding a month at a time. Because I supplemented I never got my supply back up just to breastfeed. I had to continue to combo feed formula and breast milk. Then at one I switched to whole milk and breast milk. My son just weaned himself off on his 2nd birthday.

  • DD1 self weaned at 22 months and I encouraged DD2 at 2 years because I was so sick I had to hold in puke while nursing, otherwise I would have continued.

Both were 7 months when we slowly started Baby led weaning.

As this is our last I'll probably nurse her until she goes to school

  • 1.  I'm not sure, she's almost 2 1/2 and doesn't show any signs of wanting to stop.  It really depends on when I get pregnant again.

    2.  I didn't start her on solids until 6 months.  So she was EBF until then and didn't try cow's milk until she was 1.

  • My son was exclusively breastfed from birth until 5 months when he started solids. I continued to breastfeed him and he is now 16 months old and still breastfeeding (only when going to sleep) and I am currently 6w5d pregnant with baby #2 and I plan on breastfeeding our new baby as well. I'm trying to wean my son now only because of the new baby, if I hadn't gotten pregnant again right now I would have let him self wean.
  • Thank you for answering ladies

    This.

Except I am 14w pregnant and my DD is just almost 2.

    1. DD is nearly 23 months and she nurses o/n and about 4-5 times a day. I plan on letting her go until she chooses to stop. It is likely she will self-wean in 10w or so when my colostrum starts to come in. Although I didn't self wean during my mom's pregnancy with my lil sister so I may end up attempting tandem nursing. I am playing it by ear.

    2. We EBF until 6mo when she had all the go signs for solids and we let her experiment using BLW at that point. She was eating solids at very meal in about a month. I introduced kefir at about 11mo and milk at about 13mo.

We had some latch issues due to tongue/lip ties (she had moderate jaundice bc of this) and formilk/hindmilk imbalance (inducing colic) in our first three months but DD turned out to be a strong nurser and was nursing around the clock until about 15mo when she let me start to catch a break.

  • I'm hoping to wean Ty when I get pregnant unless he self weans before that (highly doubtful). We are going to start trying in July when he turns 2.

I exclusively breastfed until he was 6 months when we introduced BLW. He still refuses wcm.
  • Most kids will self-wean between age 4 and 7 (I believe that's from the WHO). Some will self-wean earlier, especially if you're nursing while pregnant. I read somewhere that 2/3 of toddlers will self-wean at some point during your pregnancy because your supply drops and milk changes taste.

My son is 21 months old and we're trying to wean because I'm currently pregnant. He was breast and formula fed till 5 months, when we started solids.

  • I had no plan. . But ended up breastfeeding till my son was a little over 3 years old. He weaned himself....I would have gone longer.♡He will be 4 in June...and I'm having this baby in August.
  • 1) Until he weans. He is 2.5 now and still nursing.

    2) He had only breastmilk for the first 6 months. Then we added solids. We offered cow's milk at 18m but he wouldn't drink it, so it's breastmilk and water around here.
