Baby Names

Dawsyn?

What are your thoughts. I think I really like the name Dawsyn for a girl. Yes I know it will be missed spelled a lot. I'm used to that since my other 2 daughters names are always spelled wrong, Jocelynne and Keira.

Yes I know people might think it's a boy. I get that a lot with my other daughter Quinn.

  • No. My thoughts are pretty much as you described.

Why not just use Dawson? The Y doesn't make it more feminine
  • I'm not a fan of the 'y' either. Dawson looks a bit better to me, and will help her avoid having to constantly spell her name in the future.
  • I like Dawson for a boy....

Dawsyn for a girl...not so much
  • zomg the BNB elders are twitching somewhere in their cyber graves.

I love gender-bending names, but I do not like this one (I really like your DD's name, Quinn!)

  • I think it's terrible. Dawson is ok for a boy, but Dawsyn is not a name.
  • My first impression is that you don't know how to spell.

@lebebexo, not all the elders are gone. and they're still judging you.
Not sure why they would be judging me. But ok.

  • I wouldn't even pronounce "Dawsyn" the same way as "Dawson." Y doesn't just take on the sound of whatever vowel you choose to replace with it. It has its own sound.

I don't love Dawson, but would accept it, on a boy. No for a girl. It will never make me think of anything but the TV Show Dawson's Creek, which isn't really something I'd like to name my kid after.

Dawson is a name for a boy, not a girl. Adding the y does not make it more feminine. If you don't mind it being misspelled, look for an uncommon girl name like Keira, which is a beautiful name. Some ideas for you:

    Casey
    Felicia
    Francine
    Kendall
    Marilyn
    Meghan
    Ophelia
    Paige
    Priscilla
    Regan

That is a terrible name for a girl and terrible spelling for anyone. Good lord do not punish your child with that name.

    Yep.

  • I like Quinn for a girl.  I would give a serious side-eye to someone who named her child Dawsyn.  It's a misspelled version of a last name.  Sorry, it's awful.

  • I agree. It's terrible and looks like you are trying too hard to be original, I don't know what's worse, the name Dawsyn or the spelling. Your other kids have great names, please reconsider.
  • Glad to see everyone agrees!
  • If you like the name, why not just spell it correctly?

  • Op you are right it would be misspelled a lot. Starting with when you write it on her birth certificate. Chose a real name, correctly spelled. And I know some people like gender neutral names, but PLEASE give your daughter a girl's name!

  • I have a student named Emyli. It makea me think that her parents messed up on the birth certificate. Just spell it normal! I don't get this "creative" spelling. It's not creative; it's annoying.
  • Terrible.
"Creative" spellings come off as uneducated to me.
  • Don't do that to your child.
  • I hope you reconsider.  Quinn is such a beautiful name on a girl, Dawsyn (Daw-Sine) is how I'd pronounce it because Y makes a totally different sound than O does.  I don't mind Dawson on a girl (NMS but I wouldn't side-eye it), but the way you want to spell it really comes off as silly/uneducated.

  • I think Quinn on a girl is awful. It's a boys name. And Dawsyn is just terrible. Pick a girl name. There are so many great names.
