For me, with my DS (5 years ago), he slept in a wedge for the first 4 months or so; so, it wasn't really much of an issue that I took much thought to. If he moved around a lot, I may have removed them, but it never was an issue. He never used them to climb out of the crib (he didn't need to because he used his upper body to hoist himself up, lol). I 100% understand the risk of SIDs and bumpers and for all I know I could change my mind. I'm not opposed to not having them on the bed. Safety, is a concern of mine as is every mother on here, but like I said, it didn't feel like an issue with my DS. I would never agree with someone who wants them on just for décor, but, I do feel like it is a personal decision for each parent(s) to make.
If its not for decor, but the baby slept on a wedge anyway, what were you using them for? That doesn't make sense...
Like I said, with DS I didn't put much thought into it because he was in a wedge. The bumpers were already there and I just didn't take them off. So, yes, initially, I guess you can say they were there for décor, but I didn't deliberately leave them because décor was more important than my son's safety, it just wasn't anything I thought of as an issue at that point. I hope that makes sense (it's hard to explain myself typing instead of actual conversation. lol).
No bumper - other than the health risk, it seems like you have to lift the crib mattress out of the crib to change the fitted sheet - when I'm doing that in the middle of the night due to wet diaper accidents or blowouts, I'm not going to want to have to untie each little bumper ribbon to take the bumper off in order to allow me to take out the mattress and then spend time putting it back on (I'd rather spend the extra 15 minutes sleeping). My nursery is going to have enough special decor items that I really don't care about skipping the bumper.
This DS1 had a bumper on his crib for 3 weeks after having to change the sheets twice and it being such a pain in the a$$, I said screw it and put it back in the bag.
1. until your baby can roll over they are not going to get close enough to the bumper for it to be an issue. it looks pretty, but
2. DS never got stuck in the slats
3. After they can pull themselves up you are supposed to remove it anyway since they could start using it to stand on and they could fall out of the crib...
Personally I think the sets just add a bumper in there to fill out the packaging and make it seem like you are getting more and can charge more money!

Ah! You just reminded me how much I hate changing crib bedding! LOL Getting the sheet and mattress protector back on and then back into the crib was a chore. Then I had to pull the crib away from the wall just to retie the damn bumpers. Errrr. . .
FTM, but I'm pretty you're not supposed to use crib bumpers when babies are really little. By the time they're old enough for it to be safe, you really don't need one. Nursery bedding sets are expensive and unnecessary. Buy some cute crib sheets that match with your decor and wait until the baby's in a toddler bed or regular bed to buy a bedding set.

They zip off around the top, so supposedly are easier to change. The first one is a little pricey but then you buy more of just the tops. Any one used them? I think these are recommended by Lucie's List.
Anything involving your child, to me, is a personal decision. We each have our own reasoning for doing what we do. As for me, if I use anything it will be the mesh bumper.
We didn't use anything with ds until he was over a year. Then he started getting his feet and arms stuck and would wake up screaming. At that point we bought a breathable bumper. He still has it in his crib today. He's just over 2. There are several times I wake up and he's laying against it. I would never use a normal padded bumper. To me it isn't worth the risk! I love the breathable ones though!
They make mesh bumpers now that are cute but breathable in case the baby somehow rolls into it. That's what we are planning to use. And fitted sheet only, nothing else in the crib
