Which spelling is better: Ann or Anne?

We're thinking of Ann/Anne as a middle name for DD#2 - Ann is my mom's and my middle name; Anne is my MIL's name, SIL's middle name and also my little half-sister's middle name.

I like that the name is important to so many of us, but am slightly worried about insulting those whose spelling we don't use (probably over thinking?).

So - as a way to help us decide, which do you think would be misspelled the LEAST? Either way a little bit easier to have than the other?

  • I prefer the Anne spelling
  • I kinda like Anne better. That may be misspelled sometimes? But in the mn spot it's not a big deal. Either pick the one you like best and just tell the ones with the other altering that you ARE honoring them too! Our use Ann And you can tell then you chose the same spelling as you have so you wouldn't have two people in the same house with the same name but different spelling lol. I dint think it matters and nobody has any business getting offended over what you name your child. Don't blame you for worrying about it tho.

  • I'm an Anne (first name) and always say that Ann looks unfinished. However for a MN I think using the Ann spelling is fine.

And I've only had one person my entire life mispronounce my name (Starbucks barista doesn't count haha). Most people with a general idea of phonetics know the "E" is silent and not pronounced Annie.

  • Personally I like Anne over Ann. But the question I have is who would you rather "honor" more?  If its your side, then I would do Ann, if his side then Anne.  I think with your MN as Ann, your IL won't get offended if you drop the e.

  • I'm with the majority here, Anne just looks more finished.

  • My parents, dad specifically, went with "Ane" for my middle name so as not to favor the Ann relatives or the Anne relatives.  You can always do that.  Although, I will say there have been many instances of correcting spelling and pronunciation. . . . it's not really a big deal with a middle name.
  • What about using Anna so it honour a everyone/ no one in particular? I prefer the Ann spelling myself.

  • Channeling Anne of Green Gables .... 'Anne-with-an-e' is my preference! And my middle name

Ditto. My mom spells Ann without an E but I plan on using an E simply because Anne Shirley I'd my all time favorite and I think it looks prettier. :D

  • I preferAnne but what about Anna? Then you don't offend anyone and she gets her own name!
  • I prefer Anne. I would just tell all involved you spelled it the way you did because you prefer it spelled that way. Not because you are trying to honor one more than the other.
