Pregnant after 35

9.5 weeks and lost job. Employers suck! But...new beginnings! and 1st scan tomorrow!

Sorry- don't want to spread any negativity but really employers today can be ruthless and brutal.  I am pretty sure they knew I was pregnant (a lot can be found from web history, emails) before they did this.  Bummed about my loss of maternity leave coverage, paycheck, of course but the place was TOXIC.. I mean the worst job by a million times I ever had in 17 years of working.

I know it's a blessing and for the best by far.  God has blessed me with a wonderful, new beginning in my 40s!  My first ultrasound is tomorrow.  Super nervous, but hoping for the best!!!!!

  • sounds like a blessing once you get over the whole shock of it.

I was working before I got pregnant with my first.  I was planning on working until a couple months before I would deliver and then quit to be a SAHM.  However, the month we started TTC my company was bought and they were moving it out of state.  I did get pregnant that first time ttc and got to spend my whole pregnancy without a job.  It was actually really nice.  I got to stay at home and nap when I wanted and get everything ready for the baby.  I ended up taking a little seasonal position at Christmas time for about 6 weeks just because i thought it would be nice to get out a bit and I used all the cash to buy baby things.
  • Sorry about your job, though I'm not sure how you stuck around by your description of the place.  Are you planning on starting to look for another?

    Good luck tomorrow!
  • So sorry to hear about your job, but it does sound like a blessing in the long run, even it it makes for some stress in the short term.  I can commiserate, too - my DH lost his job the day after my first OB appointment.  We know it will all work out in the end!  Best wishes to you finding something new and better!

  • That is no lie!!  Many of them are pretty ruthless these days. It's really sad. I'm sorry that happened to you and I hope that everything works out well!!  I worked at an extremely toxic place before my current employer and I went off work on maternity with my daugther and never went back and I was really nervous about it. I had fantastic benefits and good pay etc etc.. but the toxic environment was just sucking the life out of me!  I had applied for other positions prior to quitting but hadn't heard back yet.. interviews but hadn't heard for sure yet. I had to give notice before I knew that I had another job and it was SO scary.. but it was seriously like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders! I got to spend 4.5 months at home with my daughter and it was fantastic.  I loved every minute of it.

  • That really sucks, but sounds like a blessing in disguise. I know really easy to say when you're not the person it happened to. If you really think it's directly tied to your pregnancy, well you've got a potential case on your hands to try and at least get some extra severance, however sometimes it's just purely a business decision and it can't be avoided pregnant person or not. You could also try to leverage it by saying you obviously will have a harder time finding a new position and therefore require additional severance. I've had to lay off more than one VERY pregnant person, while I was also pregnant and it totally sucked, but was absolutely not related to the pregnancy and totally unavoidable. Not fun, not fun at all.

  • I am very sorry to hear, but I think you have the right attitude! I do believe in the whole "one door closes, another one opens" idea.
