What is going on?

I have been having these shooting sharp pains in my whole back for nearly 4 hours on and off. I have tried everything to make them go away and it's just not happening. It's so uncomfortable I can't seem to position myself in a right position to even get myself comfortable. They last 1-2 minutes, sometimes even longer and they are a regular pain. I can even time them. I don't know if they're back contractions or just growing pains. I am 36+3 weeks. My mom had back labor and she said that's what sounds like is happening to me. I don't want to go to the hospital and seem dramatic over something that isn't even happening. Does anyone know what is going on and should I just wait it out or go into the hospital?

  • There's no way that we can definitively say what's going on. Don't wait it out. Call your doctor and I'm betting he or she will send you to the hospital. If you can't get in touch with your doctor, I'd recommend going to the hospital.

In general, if you're not sure what to do, seek medical advice from your doctor. Your doctor knows a lot more about your pregnancy than any internet board and is more qualified to give you medical advice.
  • Please call your dr. There should be an emergency number you can call that will contact you with the on-call dr. My OB practice has the emergency number listed in the after hours voice mail.

I hope everything turns out okay. Keep us posted?

I understand not wanting to seem dramatic. I'm that type of person too but please call your doctor or L&D. I'd much rather seem dramatic than risk it being too late and having my baby at home or in the car. I've also learned that nurses do not see you as dramatic when going to the hospital with concerns. They'd rather be safe than sorry too.
