a month of weight gain :(

I'm 26 wks and at my last doctors appointment, i found out i had gained 20 lbs in one month. My doctor made me feel horrible about it! I honestly don't know how or why i gained so much so fast and it has me really worried. She says i only have 5 lbs to gain the rest of my pregnancy, which sounds pretty unrealistic. Obviously I'll just eat healthy the rest of my pregnancy.. but has anyone else experienced this type of weight gain? Would love to hear some experiences

Re: a month of weight gain :(

  • I had a 12 lb gain in December which the doc declared was due to the "holidays". I didn't eat that differently and honestly only feel bigger in the belly. I'm going to try and exercise more but since I don't know how I gained weight it's hard to do something differently. :-(

  • Oh my gosh, what a great idea! She made me feel like such a jerk lol. As if any of us really need one more thing to worry about! I just hope i won't have too much to lose afterwards. :/
  • I think in one month I gained 10 lbs. So far have gained 30+ lbs. My OB hasn't said anything about it but if they do I'm going to try to let it roll, because I'm not eating horribly and I still feel OK. There is no set # of lbs you should/shouldn't gain because every body is different.

  • Have you taken your glucose test yet? Quick weight gain is sometimes a sign of GD. Not trying to scare you. I had that with my first pregnancy. Try not to stress about it!

  • YES! I have gained like 12 pounds in 4 weeks and I got a serious talking to by TWO different doctors at my last appointment. I go again Friday and I'm dreading it because I know I'm gaining more than they told me to. It's so humiliating getting lectured. And just the last few days I started to notice I'm getting chubby in the face. I'm usually naturally thin, so it's hard enough looking heavier- it's even harder when your dr is talking to you like you're an out of control whale! That said, this is my second pregnancy and I know I'll lose it and it's temporary and this is my last pregnancy so I'm not really beating myself up over it at all. But I AM dreading the appointment and lecture :/

    Same here!
  • I'm sorry your doctor made you feel bad! I'm the one that made the post about doctor telling me to gain no more weight (only gained 3lbs max but overweight) It's just another thing we don't need to stress about. Your 20lbs could be partly a big meal before weigh-in, heavy clothes, anything.  :(

This. I was thinking of water retention due to hypertension or pre E. I, personally, would not refuse to get weighed as that kind of weight gain sounds like more than just over eating. Your dr isn't ordering any tests...24 hour urine, glucose? :(
  • So far, I've gained 50 pounds!

I gained 60lbs with my 9yr DD! Most I have ever gained during pregnancy. My sugar and everything was fine though. She was a big baby or bigger I should say that the others have been. I gained 10lbs in one month with her. I would keep a watch though as rapid weight gain can be signs of sugar or BP issues but not always! Have you had your glucose test yet? Sometimes rapid weight gain is of concern to the doctor due to underlying medical reasons and then other times it just happens. I hope it was just one of those random things and not anything medical related! T&Ps to you. Don't beat yourself up about though it's hard to predict how much anyone will or won't gain during pregnancy. I have seen some of the most healthiest eaters gain a lot and then junk food eaters hardly gain anything. Each person is different!

  • Honestly, 20 lbs in one month is unusual. That's a lot of weight. I would keep an eye on what you are gaining weekly, and if it adds up to such a significant amount again, make sure your doctor looks into possible underlying medical issues like GD.

  • Sorry to hear that! It is so tough. I also have gotten a lecture at my last couple appointments. I am 26 weeks tomorrow and have gained 20 pounds. I am supposed to gain 25-35 pounds total so I'm watching it very closely. I've been trying to eat smaller portions, more fruits and veggies and I cut out desserts, soda and starbucks. I miss ice cream!
  • Yes i had my glucose test, everything is just fine! Thankful for that. I've always been healthy, athletic, thin, and as a ftm I'm feeling anxious about the weight gain anyway.. it was just frustrating to have my dr make me feel so bad when I'm already feeling that way! Thanks for all your responses.

One of my favorite pajama pants is too tight around the hips now. I'm getting really frustrated and still have 4 months to go.

  • As PP have said 20lbs in one month could be a sign of an underlying problem. If your doctor didnt say anything they wouldn't be doing their job. Limiting yourself to only 5lbs more is not the right strategy. Try to focus on your nutrition and eating habits over then next few weeks or ask to see a nutritionist. They might be able to help.
  • I was overweight with DD (again with this guy) and I gained 45 pounds with her.  Just make sure your being healthy and what you gain is what you gain.  DD was 7 pounds 6 oz and perfectly healthy even with my 45 pounds.
  • Just remember that while rapid weight gain can be a SIGN of a problem the weight gain itself is not the problem. If your doctor is really concerned they should be doing additional tests. Unfortunately, they usually just rag on your weight and leave it at that because they aren't actually that concerned. Blood pressure is a much better indication of preeclampsia and a urine or blood test will rule out blood sugar issues.
  • During my last pregnancy I gained 50 pounds overall. This time I'm trying to be a little bit more careful and eat healthier. The rule I've been following this pregnancy is trying to average about a pound a week. If I can do that then I will be at 40 pounds for the whole pregnancy which I would be okay with. Right now I am at 18 lbs at 22 weeks but it's getting harder because I feel like I need to eat more these days.
  • I'm 25 weeks and have put on 23 pounds. I'm definitely not happy about it. I know you are supposed to put on a pound a week, but most weeks I put on 2 pounds a week.
  • I might literally take the cake at gaining 80lb my first pregnancy at 18 yo with my DS . Lost it all within a year though. Take any tests they ask but I would be firm and let them know not to f#ck with your emotions. This time at 27 I've still gained about 30lbs at 25 weeks but have been mowing fruit, amd veggies. What are ya gonna do ?
  • Doctors can be such jerks about that. Forget the doctor. Eat when your hungry and embrace the curves. You can lose it after the lil guy gets here
  • Im 23 weeks tommorow n have gained 20 lbs.. my mom n sisters say thats way to much, i really aint looking forward to my next midwife appointment.. i havent been eating the best so im gonna cut out desserts n joices, n go on walks more often.. really y is it to the doctor unless its causing issues.. srry u had to hear that, gaining all this weight is depressing enough without someone scolding u for it
  • I personally stopped weighing myself once the second trimester hit and look away from the scale at the dr because I know I will get upset seeing my weight gain. Quite frankly I'm of the mindset that I'm pregnant and allow myself to overindulge (craving major sweets with this baby which is not normally something I eat). However I make sure to eat well balanced meals on top of my cravings so baby is getting plenty of nutrients. As long as your tests are all normal and baby is healthy in there I don't think anything else matters. My dr doesn't even mention my weight even though I know I've gained more than I should. It's so hard not to get down on yourself when your body is doing things out of your control. I would personally say something to your dr if she brings it up again and doesn't have a medical reason for doing so. Just take care of yourself and be kind to yourself. Growing a human is tough work!
  • I have gained a good amount of weight and have gotten the lecture 2 or 3 times. The thing is, I'm eating VERY healthy(spinach salads like theyre candy!) and going to the gym a few times a week. My blood pressure is great and glucose test went fine. They see one number and don't consider the
Overall picture or health of the patient. I know a co-worker, nurse btw, whose docs were concerned she wasn't gaining. Well, she ate her weight in chocolate cake and pb&js like an idiot and wound up with GD. I swear it's impossible to find a good ob who 1) listens to you and 2) acts like they have 5 minutes to get to know you.....uuuuuugggggghhhh! :)

I gained 10 pounds last month! I'm completely baffled. I did not change anything I was doing or eating. Prior to this month I was gaining 1.5-2 pounds per month. My midwives were pretty great about it and sat down with me to try to figure out the cause and reminded me that my overall weight gain is OK, but also expressed concern that up until now I have been a model patient with stellar labs (glucose test was great too) and now I have suddenly gained a lot of weight.
So now I'm logging all my meals and we will see what happens when I go back in two weeks... I'm just so confused about how it's even possible to gain so much weight in one month...
Edited to add: I don't think it's all baby, I've noticed my thighs, butt and upper back expanding.... Guess more time at the gym is in order...
