Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is there ANYTHING safe for teething that works? :-(

DD has been crying all night for 3 nights & very cranky during the day (not to mention tired from not sleeping).  I haven't found anything that I'm comfortable giving her.  Teething tablets have Belladonna (no, thanks) and there's a lot of warnings about clove oil overdose as well, so I don't feel comfortable giving her either of those.  The warnings about baby orajel & babies stopping breathing scare me.  I hate to keep giving her Tylenol over & over, plus we all know Tylenol doesn't work on us, so why would it work on babies? (As DH says, 'you might as well take a tic-tac!').  Is there anything I can do to help my baby sleep, or will we just suffer endlessly until she has a full set of teeth?

Also, we can feel way more of her tooth bed on the sides & back where  the molars are than we can in the front.  Does this mean she's going to get molars first?  I know that's unheard of, but she still hasn't cut a front tooth yet, and when she bites on stuff, she immediately puts it to the back/sides of her mouth, not the front.

  • I put some Crown in her bottle.

No, seriously, DD has no front teeth yet either, but her canines are pushing out and she is really cranky. Have you tried Motrin? It is supposed to be better than Tylenol.

  • I'd say motrin. worked wonders for DD. not sure if that's what you are looking for. i like it cuz it's every 8 hours, not every 4 like tylenol.

Ditto...motrin helps more with the swelling than tylenol.

  • I haven't tried this yet but some people have said that they put frozen blueberries in those mesh feeders (in the baby aisle at walmart or at BRU)
  • Frozen washcloths.  Recommended by the health nurse and the only thing that seems to help.

  • Tylenol does nothing for Emerson's pain....Motrin is a life saver for sure!  It noticably kicks in about 30 after we give it to her.

  • Also, try massaging her gums.  That helps for Madeleine.  Although, now that she has both top and bottom teeth, it's quite dangerous for me.
  • I've always used the Hyland teething tablets but I see you don't feel comfortable with those?  (My 2 yr old actually asked for them when her molars were coming in so I know they helped her.)  Give motrin a try and just b/c tylenol doesn't work for you doesn't mean it won't work for your DD.
  • we also put his crib mattress on a pretty serious incline because it helps with the throbbing.  I saw in another post that another mom does this too.

we use motrin for pain at night.  during the day, we put teething biscuits in a mesh feeder to let him chew on.  I've put those in the freezer before too.

Mommy to Seth (4) and Catherine Anne (13 mo.) Excited to welcome a third child in March of 2013!

The warnings about baby orajel & babies stopping breathing scare me.

Can you tell me from which reputable medical source you're finding these warnings? I searched all over the web and couldn't find anything other than some nest-lore and a few vauge non-medical references. No evidence of any babies stopping breathing or dying.

  • There is something that is completely natural and safe that I have used with DS when he was teething and that I have been using with DD this time around.

It is homeopathic and it works great. It is called Camilia by the Boiron Laboratories. You can find it at any Whole Food  stores or any other natural product stores.

Here is the link to it if you want to do a search on the internet:

I am French and that's what all my friends who have kids in France use for teething. In my opinion it works better that everything else I have tried for teething. Hopefully it will work for your baby too.

  • I know every baby is different, but Tylenol twice a day works for us. He also gets some comfort from the raspberry teething pacifier and I refridgerate his regular soothie pacifier and give it to him at bedtime.
  • I certainly understand your caution but repeat doses of Tylenol could do more harm than a couple Hylands tablets at night...note:?

"To put homeopathic dosages in perspective, typically a 10-pound child would need to ingest 1,000 Hyland?s Teething Tablets (at least 6 bottles of 125 tablets) to exhibit even the first possible side effect of Belladonna."

?But to each his own, no judgement here, just know that Tylenol or Motrin everyday isn't good either.

  • I am more comfortable giving my DD clove oil than Tylenol. Four drops in a tablespoon of olive oil and apply to the gums.

It's the only thing that works for her.

I didn't like the Camilia teething liquid. DD got an upset tummy both times that I used it.

  • motrin & frozen fruit in the mesh feeder.  Also warm baths in California Baby overtired & cranky bubble bath seem to help her relax a little.  Our pedi said no to orajel because it can cause them to not chew on stuff to help the pain which helps the teeth break through.  All that said, at this moment, not a whole lot is helping DD right now, but she's got 1 tooth barely through (2 all the way on the bottom, has had those for a while though) and 5 more working on coming out.
  • I find that Tylenol works for me.  :o)

DS doesn't have teeth yet, but I've heard Motrin is better for pain.  I also have used Hyland Teething Tablets.

P.S. What's the origin of your nest name?  I'm asking because our dog came with the name Pelusa when we adopted her.

  • I find that a cold wet wash cloth works the best for us.  DS actually chews on it and holds it in between his gums and pulls.  I guess the pulling helps with the pain.  Tylenol kind of works for us and the teething tablets only work if he's not in a lot of pain.  Motrin works the best at night.   Oh, and if his mouth isn't too sensitive, we give him frozen banana in his mesh teether.
