Swollen ankles at 17 weeks

Ladies, when did you start to notice swelling in your ankles? I'm 17 weeks and noticed yesterday that my ankles were a little swollen which really shocked me. I drink plenty of water, and I'm on my feet feet for most of the day. I also haven't gained an insane amount of weight....some people can't even tell I'm pregnant. I also had insane itching/tingling sensations (no rash, felt internal) on only one foot last night. I haven't felt it today just last night in one foot while I slept. Does this sound normal? I know it's not serious so I won't be calling my doctor.

Re: Swollen ankles at 17 weeks

  • Are you always on your feet? to help with reduction of swelling you need to sit and stand every hour if you can. continue to drink lots of water, reduce your salt intake (there is a lot hidden in processed foods) and elevate your feet (preferably above your heart) whenever you can. I had sever edema with  my first at around 24 weeks is when it started for me. I am trying to be much better about things this time around as I gained almost 25 lbs in water weight...now it does come off fairly quickly after the birth, but can also be painful/uncomfortable at the end of the pregnancy.

Hope this helps. As for the tingling it could be baby on your siatic nerve, but it seems a little early for that, but you can ask your OB at your next appointment if it continues.

  • I'm a teacher too and I make sure I sit down every other hour, The school should have done a health and safety check and they have to let you sit, so take advantage of it!
  • I started noticing swelling around 17 weeks too.  Since you're teaching, consider pulling a student-sized desk to the front of the classroom (or wherever you normally stand when you're instructing the whole class) so you can sit on it briefly as you're giving instruction.  Consider putting a box or step stool underneath your desk so you can elevate your feet during planning periods and lunch.
