Exposing Newborn to non-immunized children

My baby is currently 3 months and is up to date with his immunizations. However, his father's siblings (ages 7 and 12) are not immunized. I cringe at the thought of letting the siblings hold and be around my baby. The 7 year old constantly touches and hovers around the baby and I know she doesn't wash her hands. My mother-in-law let her 7 year old daughter hold my baby (without my permission!) and now she expects to hold my baby.  Every time the 7 year old asks to hold the baby, I make up some excuse to say no because she's not immunized and I think she's too young to hold my baby. Unfortunately, my husband and mother-in-law do not believe there's a problem. My husband's entire family seems to get sick easily and I don't want my baby to get sick from them. How do I express my feelings to them? Or should I not be worried?

  • I have this same concern. Measles is a real thing occurring right now. Stand your ground. It's her choice not to immunize, but it is your choise to keep your child away from her child since yours is too young to be immunized.

I agree with you and feelt he same way

  • You need to stand up for your baby. What makes you more uncomfortable, an awkward conversation or your baby getting sick?

theresat858 totally agree...it's not even a debate. We sent an email with a list of vaccines people had to get to be allowed in the house and not one person even tried to debate us.

  • I'd excuse myself from family functions. If that is not an option insist that everyone wash their hands before handling the baby.

Folks had no problem squirting sanitizer on their hands or washing when I asked them to. The reasoning is pretty sound.
