With my first, we did bedsharing until he was around a month old, which worked out nicely for nursing. However, I was too afraid to just lay on my side, place him on my breast, and go back to sleep. Once or twice I fell asleep and I woke up panicked that I had smothered him or something but both times he was just fine and fast asleep. How do I get over this fear? I want to be able to be more successful this time with nursing (we're expecting our 2nd this July). I couldn't stand not getting enough sleep the first time. It was hell for me.
and then, don't worry! as a BFing mom, you will have a natural awareness of where your LO is, and will wake if he stirs or repositions. i coslept with my DS (he still does, in fact), and in the early months he never left the crook of my arm. make sure you keep your LO on the side away from your SO.
most of the horror stories you hear about parents overlaying their babies while cosleeping involve the use of drugs or alcohol.
