Hi everyone,
I lost my daughter Mara just over a month ago. My water broke at 24 weeks 2 days, and I delivered her by c-section that same day. Based on her size doctors think she was more like 25 weeks. She lived for 2 days at the NICU at another hospital (my hospital could only take babies 28 + weeks). My insurance would not cover the cost of my ambulance for transfer to the new hospital, but I was discharged a day early so I could go see her where she was. She passed away that same night so I had a few precious hours with her.
The day before my water broke we noticed that she wasn't moving nearly as much as normal, but my monthly appointment was scheduled for the next day so I was not too concerned. After delivery my placenta tested positive for Group B Strep, and she was very sick (infected) when she was born. The doctors feel it is most likely that the GBS caused the preterm labor (as opposed to the preterm labor enabling the GBS to go up and into the womb). Apparently very early in my pregnancy they did a vaginal culture for GBS and I tested at very high levels. What frustrates me the most is that I wasn't told that I was GBS positive, and that even though my ob/gyn practice tests at the beginning of pregnancy, they only treat GBS at the time of delivery. Everyone tells me that the chances of the bacteria infecting the womb are so small, and this happens so infrequently, so my case is seen as an unlucky, uncommon occurrence and not something that was preventable. It seems like most doctors, as well as most of the research, focuses on early onset and late onset GBS. These of course are also devastating, but makes me nervous for my next pregnancy and for other women that GBS is not taken considered serious during pregnancy.
My doctor told me that for a future pregnancy they may consult with MFM and would likely test throughout my pregnancy for GBS and treat with penicillin due to my history. I'm really curious to hear from any other women who have experienced loss due to prenatal onset GBS. What were your experiences like with the doctors? If you have had any pregnancies since, did your doctors treat your pregnancy differently in terms of the GBS? Thanks in advance for your feedback and support.
