2nd Trimester

Dilated Kidney

We went for our 20w yesterday and were told that our baby has a slightly dilated kidney. At first, she made it seem perfectly normal but then she mentioned downs and made it seem like a very big problem.

We had originally refused the Harmony test but changed our minds due to this finding. I'm supposed to see a high risk doctor tomorrow but am second guessing myself as I've read most babies fix the issue on their own and would rather not drag this out any longer than necessary.

Any other moms experienced this? What was your next step? Outcome? TIA

  • Had same experience with our a/s.  We are finally almost to our follow-up ultrasound (having it on Monday).  We have been up and down about it and about testing, but decided to not move forward with testing because of so many false positives; and that it wouldn't change our mind with anything anyways.  It has certainly been scary and stressful, as we all want our babies to be healthy.  I'll be sending T's & P's your way!
  • I found out my DD had one kidney that was dilated at the anatomy scan as well. I had to get an ultrasound done every four weeks until birth to monitor the dilation. I remember being worried about my baby being healthy too.

It actually is very common and most of the time it clears up before the baby is born. Ultrasounds also aren't always very clear either. If it doesn't clear up then your baby will be put on antibiotics to reduce infection risk and be monitored up until a year and then have a small surgery then to correct it.

I was told to get an ultrasound after my DD was born. We did it at the hospital and it was all gone. We were so grateful for it because I had worried about it for the last half of pregnancy. I hope it will all go well for you too and try not to worry about it too much.

  • Thank you all for your input! I wish I had stuck to my gut regarding the Blood test, but I was panicked and wanted to do everything that I could. I have cancelled the appointment with high risk and will be f/up with my doctor in 4 weeks for a repeat ultrasound to check the kidney again. I have faith that this issue will resolve on its own in time!
  • I'm glad to hear you're feeling better @channinglanea‌

  • Update: The doctor called yesterday and the lab results were all normal!!! Now we just have to monitor the kidney and it should correct itself by birth! Glory to God!!!
  • I'm going through this right now. Went in for my 20 week on Monday and both of baby boy's kidneys are enlarged, although the kidneys are collecting and expelling urine.  Doctor was very vague and said that kidney issues can range from mild to severe, but wouldn't give me a worst case scenario (I want to be prepared). I have a level 2 scan today and am super nervous. This is my first baby and I am 36.
