Flying with Twins + a toddler

...anyone do it? We need to take a couple of trips to the east coast this year (we're in California) and I don't know how to do it. I just flew with one of my twins and a girlfriend and her 8 month old and it was hard with just 2 babies. I don't know how DH and I will do it with 3 kids.

Our options are seats for everyone in coach or First class with DH and I each having one of the twins as a lap infant and a seat for DD. I just flew 1st with one of my boys this weekend on a short flight and it was great to have the extra room. But wondering if it'd actually be easier to be in coach with a seat for everyone. My biggest issue is if DD needs to go to the bathroom.

Also, how did you manage getting through the airport with so much stuff? I'm thinking we could check the stroller and carseats and just wear the babies and hope DD doesn't run off.

I have so much anxiety over this, but we really need to do it.

Re: Flying with Twins + a toddler

  • We did coach with seats for 3 of the 4 of us - and here is why I would recommend it: You can actually use the car seats in the seats. On the way there, we just raised the arm rests and made a big couch for everyone which worked ok. But on the way back, we brought one car seat and switched the girls in and out of it so they could take naps. This helped a lot so that we had hands free to make bottles or go change the other's diaper.

We brought our Joovy Twin Roo stroller through security with the car seats and gate checked all but the one car seat that we used in the plane. At LAX it was a bit tricky but we made it through and it was ok. Everyone was super helpful and this was during the biggest holiday travel day of the year. Security had been my biggest fear but it was over fast and it all went ok.

On the way home in Connecticut it was a BREEZE through security. They even helped with the Joovy and car seats.

I was happy to have the seats and stroller for changing planes because the gates were so far apart. Also it made it easier to have hands free for changing diapers. As soon as we were off the plane we just stored all of our bags under the stroller. We even used it to "cage in" the girls while waiting at the gate, by placing it long ways at the end of a bank of seats.

I had a lot of help and advice from other MoMs and one who has a toddler too so please ask away!  And don't be nervous!
