The dreaded 30 minute nap

How is everyone dealing with it? LO has it timed perfectly, so yesterday I was in there ready to pounce when the 30 minutes were up--sure enough, she started stirring and lifted her head, so I started patting her back and sshhhhing, and it didn't work for shiz.

WHY ARE NAPS SO HARD WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Re: The dreaded 30 minute nap

  • ^WSS. I assume he'll grow out of it and take longer naps eventually. If he's slept 30 minutes, he won't go back down until he's been up a while. I hate it.

  • I just need to accept it. My mom said I was a terrible napper, too.
  • My son gets up earlier than my toddler, goes to bed later, and naps less.  I don't get it.  He hardly sleeps.  It's killing me.  Fingers crossed he gets into a better sleep routine soon.
  • From what I read most babies should learn by 6 months how to transition from one sleep cycle to the next during the day. Fingers crossed....
  • Yes, like PP said, I'm waiting for 6 months (have a couple of weeks to go). I have just accepted it. Over the past few weeks she had thrown in a lot of 50-70 min naps in. My LO sleeps 12-13 hours straight through the night so I'm not complaining! I'll take the short naps.
  • @Kandreas1‌ is that where you put pressure on them as they stir? We are nap training starting today so I am taking all tips I can get. He has been quietly kicking in his crib for over an hour with only a 20 minute nap.
  • Thank you!

@Pink021‌ is it okay to post a link to a forum with information on extending naps with pressure on jolts?

@ekneipp‌ you put pressure on a couple minutes before the time they wake up. DS is like clockwork. I had a hand on his arms and legs. It's tough on your back but I brought a stool in and that helped a bit. You continue holding for 5 minutes after the jolt. DS had three jolts so I waited a full five minutes after the last jolt.

He is still napping... 1hr 5 mins! I am cautiously optimistic.

Craaaaaazy!! I'm trying this at her next nap.
  • Once I put LO down I start the stop watch on my phone, he has to nap for a hour plus. If it's earlier I will go in and rock him back to sleep. The kid refuses to nap. But there are times I go in and he is wide awake, so then I pretend he took a good nap and we play some more and then attempt a better nap the next time.

We napped trained right after christmas. He went from 30 minute naps to consistently 1.5-2 hour naps

What kind of nap training? We used ferber for our nighttime sleep, but naps have become a real pain.
  • Totally shocked right now, trying not to get too excited, but for our second attempt at a nap today he went to sleep in 10 min and has been sleeping for over an hour in his crib...
  • 40 minutes. Going to try the pressure on the jolt again tomorrow, maybe I timed it wrong? Argggghhghgghhhh
  • After I started putting my kid down awake (but clearly tired) her naps went from 40 minutes to an hour twenty or 2 hours. I don't miss bouncing her to sleep either :)

  • My LO has always had 30 minute naps. I've just accepted it at this point lol
    This.
