Tamiflu

My doctor prescribed me Tamiflu because I came in contact with someone at the doctors office with influenza. It says in the drug information that its unsure of what it could do to an unborn child and that scares me. Ive taken 3 doses so far but only because it was the OB/GYN who prescribed it. I just want some input. Should I be worried?

Re: Tamiflu

  • I wouldn't. It only reduces the flu by one day.... not effective.

  • About influenza? Yes.

Lots of OBs prescribe Tamiflu when needed. I am assuming that your doctor took your medical information into consideration before prescribing it. I would continue on the course of treatment.
  • Why would your obgyn prescribe it if it could hurt your baby? Having a bad case of the flu can be damaging.

  • During my pregnancy I have had two things prescribed that say do not to take when pregnant....but my dr. specifically told me it would say that, but it was still ok to take. I would double check with your dr.

  • Always ask your doctor about what drugs are or are not safe. You can always double check with your pharmacist if you are still doubtful. I asked both today when I got antibiotics for strep throat- not that I doubted the perscribing dr, I just needed some reassurance I guess.
  • @NikkiElise92‌ where you also showing symptoms of the flu or did they just prescribe it because you came in contact with someone. I'm just asking because I was in contact with my step daughters when they started showing symptoms of the flu on Sunday. I figured I would contact my OB if I started having symptoms but now I'm thinking I should just give her a call tomorrow
  • I was in close contact for a period of multiple hours w someone who the next day tested positive for type A. My OB prescribed tamiful immediately. The risks are low post first tri and the risk of getting the flu w confirmed exposure is much worse then the Med.

  • As a medical professional, posts like these kind of irk me.  Your doctor prescribed it because he believes it is in the best interest of you and your baby.  If you question it, bring it up to him and not to a forum of mostly non-medically trained people.
  • (May lurker) My SIL had horrible respiratory flu and stomach virus in dec at 6 months pregnant. She was given Tamiflu. I can also tell you she eats lunch meat and gets her hair dyed- she's fearless.

You aren't alone in taking Tamiflu.
