High AFP Level

So I got "that" call from my OB (and the actual OB, not a nurse ) - my 2nd trimester blood tests came back and I'm at an increased risk for a neural tube disorder (1/160).  I have my A/S tomorrow as scheduled, but she recommended that I see a MFM at a local hospital for another sonogram as soon as I am able to get an appointment.  I understand that my risk is still less than 1%, but just not the news I expected to hear, especially as I am already HR because of an incompetent cervix.  I have read that there are many false positives; just looking to hear some experiences with this.  My DD's pregnancy was a dream and we were hoping that this one would be just a smooth.

With my daughter I had my 2nd trimester blood work come back high too, I cried well sobbed uncontrollably for probably 2hrs. I completely understand the fear, I had another ultrasound and talked with my doctor Everything was fine and I have birth to a very healthy 9lb 13oz girl.
Please keep us updated on what the outcome is, I'll keep you in my thoughts

Thank you!  I went for my sono and everything looked good.  In fact, DH asked the OB if we didn't have the blood test, if they would have been concerned and she said no, that it would have been deemed a normal ultrasound.  The sono tech is actually trained in high risk so she was very diligent at looking at everything.  My doctor failed to mention that she deems anything less than 1/200 as abnormal, so I was only "mildly" abnormal in my levels (1/160).  They did find that I have a low anterior placenta, and I recall coming across a few posts that said that some doctors believe that that can contribute to a slightly elevated AFP level.  I still am going for a MFM consult and sono and will see what they say, but it's a huge weight off my shoulders.  And we're Team BLUE!

so glad things turned out well for you- In a similar boat and going to HR doc on Tuesday. Not the news we wanted to hear but hoping for good things!
