High-Risk Pregnancy

High AFP Level

So I got "that" call from my OB (and the actual OB, not a nurse :/) - my 2nd trimester blood tests came back and I'm at an increased risk for a neural tube disorder (1/160).  I have my A/S tomorrow as scheduled, but she recommended that I see a MFM at a local hospital for another sonogram as soon as I am able to get an appointment.  I understand that my risk is still less than 1%, but just not the news I expected to hear, especially as I am already HR because of an incompetent cervix.  I have read that there are many false positives; just looking to hear some experiences with this.  My DD's pregnancy was a dream and we were hoping that this one would be just a smooth.

Re: High AFP Level

  • Hey there I've already posted about this a bunch. I had the quad screen done and was terrified when the results came back and I had a 1 in 20 chance of having a baby with down syndrome. My husband and I went in for a level II ultrasound and everything looked great but we were told that down syndrome can't be diagnosed via ultrasound. We decided to have the Harmony NIPT test done, which is a blood test that looks at the baby's DNA in your blood. We had to wait a long week and a half for results but they finally came in and everything was fine. I regret taking the quad screen because it is so inaccurate. Your chances are GREAT that everything is fine and I most certainly wouldn't worry until you have an actual reason to....I know, easier said than done. Also, unlike down syndrome, I believe that ultrasounds are more accurate at picking up neural tube defects? Keep us updated! I will be thinking about you!!

  • Thank you!  I had my A/S today and everything looked fine.  In fact, my DH asked if we didn't have the blood test done, would they have been concerned and the OB said no, it would have looked like a normal 18 week sono.  They did note that I have a low anterior placenta, which, in all my crazy, frenzied reading last night, I did come across a few people who said that there was a thought that that could cause a higher AFP level.  My doctor failed to tell me last night that I was only mildly abnormal (she considers anything over 1/200 to be normal, so 1/160 is only slightly lower).  I am still going for a consult at a MFM and sono just to get a second opinion, but I'm feeling much better :)  Oh, and we're team BLUE!
