help everyone. I used a primer from porter paints while pregnant. I simply didn't know how bad the fumes would be. Does anyone know how this could affect the baby? I kept the doors open, but I can still smell it.
I just painted my sons room a few hours ago, and am fine. According to the American Pregnancy Association, you can paint with regular paints, but try to avoid exposure to primers unless in a well-ventilated area. The only real cases of birth defects or pregnancy issues is if you are exposed for long periods of time (ie: you work in a paint factory).
I don't know how it affects your LO but I would definitely open windows in that room and shut the door for a bit to air it out... Maybe 20 mins or so. Also stay out of the room until the fumes clear.
We painted our house while I was 12 weeks, my friend who is a painter by trade said that all oil based or enamel based are not good. It's during painting and for 48 hours afterwards while it's off gassing that is the worst, but he also said was prolonged exposure is the risk and during first trimester. Leave area, close the door to block it off and open all windows. Ventilation is the key. Also even when dry, the paint may not have cured, you can tell by touching it, not cured will still be softish. Personally I just stayed my mums the whole time as just out of first tri and couldn't handle smell. Google has a lot of info about painting and pregnancy, try not to worry as everything I read was about first tri and said if you really had to paint wait till after 14 weeks:)
I paint almost every weekend with oil based paint, latex or acrylic depending on the project. I painted my son's entire room when pregnant and that includes Kilz on the walls and painting the ceiling. You and baby are fine.
