Weight gain and rode OB comments

I am normally around 128 lbs. with my first I gained a good amount and was prob around 175 or 180 when I had her. I lost it all and was back to normal. I'm now pregnant with my second and the weight gain is a lot faster. I'm 28 Wks and as of my appt at 27 Wks I was already 171. The only difference I can tell of between the two is that I was walking about 2 mi a day with my first and now I don't work out at all unless u count chasing dd around. I just can't do it with it being cold and dark out and being tired after putting dd down for bed. Is anyone else experiencing faster gains with the second or is it just me? My ob commented I'm going to be over 200 lbs when this is over and not in a nice way. Like in a what have u been eating kind of way (he asked that too). I admitted I prob had more sweets than usual during the holidays but not more than I normally would at holiday time. I'm just scared bc I have a few months left and my back already hurts and I don't want baby to be too big!

Weight gain is stressing me out too! I've increased my protein and fiber intake, which has definitely helped curb my previously unhealthy snack choices. Keep your head up!

  • The amount you've gained and your prepregnacy weight doesn't matter to anyone here.  This is one of the few places were weight isn't judged.

Your doctor was doing their job.

In regards to your question about gaining faster with your second, no I'm not.  I'd gained over twice as much by this time with my last.
  • Every woman is different and every pregnancy is different so I agree with earlier commentators that you'll probably not get a lot of use from comparison.

I understand curiosity about others' though. I'm normally 130 and gained 40 with my first. I'm almost 27 weeks and so far have gained 5 pounds less than with my son (though there were 5 pounds i never lost from my first so all in all I'm 10 pounds "ahead" of the last pregnancy).

I'm eating as clean as possible (though not restricting calories), doing Tracy Anderson pregnancy DVDs 4 to 5 times a week and walking walking walking. I learned with my first that there really isn't a time in life where you can eat whatever you want and not exercise without paying for it later. I'm not obsessing but I'm putting a daily effort into healthy habits with this pregnancy, in a way I didn't before.

That said, it's your body and your pregnancy. Do whatever YOU think is best!

  • I'm a little overweight to begin with, so my weight is a concern, and my ob and I discuss every appointment. It can feel personal at times, but I understand as a health care professional, his job is my and his patient's health. I am on the opposite spectrum as you, as I have only gained 8 lbs, but every woman is different during pregnancy and most providers have the best interest of the mothers and babies in mind. If your weight gain puts you at risk for serious complications, I think it's best to discuss, just as my initial weight is something my ob found important to discuss with me.

Personally, I'm gaining at a slower rate. I know I overindulged in my first PG and have consciously tried harder to make better choices this time around.
It doesn't sound to me like your Dr was being rude, if he's concerned with your weight gain, then he has a responsibility to address it.

  • I know it feels so uncomfortable when the doctor makes a comment that seems to judge or criticize you about your weight. :( but as others have said, they're just doing their job-- though some can be more gentle in their delivery of the truth than others.

I agree with this comment. I also feel uncomfortable when the doctor brings up my weight/weight gain. But they are doing their jobs. It must be discussed if their is a medical concern.

  • I am definitely gaining faster the second time around 30 pounds at 26 weeks and my OB hasn't said a word about it.  I am unhappy with the fast weight gain and am hoping to taper off the next few months.
  • I've gained some serious weight and this is my third baby! I'm super hungry all the time! But I was a big eater even before I was pregnant! It is weird that I have the weight talk with my doctor EVERY appointment! I completely understand my friend :)
  • I've for sure gained faster with this baby. ( my 3rd) doctor isn't concerned though. It stresses me out though. I'm up about 35 pounds and I'm 27 weeks. :( I did start out small, but still. Sigh.
