This has an overview of sleep training methods. You could pick one that you're interested in and then research more from there. Usually online you can find a description of how each method works.

We used the Ferber method when LO was 5 months old. We had had a horrible month with the sleep regression, and decided to throw a hail mary and try the CIO method. We decided ahead of time to just try it for 1hr, and if it didn't work we'd try again in 1-2 wks. We were shocked when she fell asleep in 45 min. Yes, there was crying, but you check on them frequently, and you can decide when you're done. I took a long shower while DH checked on her, bc the cries were getting to me, even though I knew she was safe and ok, they just dug in to me more bc: hormones.
If we hadn't been successful we would have moved on to another method. Or, we prob would have used a sleep consultant and shelled out the $. Anything to get the kid to sleep!
Ditto PP's for that awesome link - they do a great job explaining each method.
