Breastfeeding

tongue tied solutions?

Both of my girls are tongue tied, making it painful to BF. More so for my littler one. I have taken to pumping and bottle feeding the little one and BF the bigger girl, sometimes she hurts, sometimes not....

Any advice? After searching tongue tied here, I will ask the pedi next visit. Or may call sooner to see about necessity/ feasibilty of getting clipped- just wondering if there's anything else I could be doing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had my LOs tongue tie clipped before we left the hospital by a pediatric ENT surgeon. It was the simplest procedure. They numbed her mouth and clipped it and I held her the whole time. She actually fell asleep before we even took the gause out. It took 5 minutes and was harder on me than her. The next feeding she was able to latch without a nipple shield for the first time. I was told that due to the severity of my daughter's tongue tie, it would likely cause speech problems later on and we would have to have the procedure eventually anyway, and if we waited until she was a toddler, she would likely have to be put under general anesthesia. I highly recommending having it clipped as soon as you can. There's no way I would have continued breastfeeding long without it.

  • We had my LO's tongue tie fixed by a pediatric ENT as well.  We had the procedure done when we were able to leave the hospital, so he was 5 days old.  Unlike PP, I didn't get to hold him while they did it, but the procedure was about a minute (his was a very mild case) and he was able to nurse him immediately afterward.  I noticed a huge difference right away and we are still happily BFing 10 months later.  GL with your decision!
  • Thanks, we have to use nipple shields, too. I thought it may have been nipple confusion, now I suspect the tongue tie makes it difficult for them without.

  • I agree with pp to get opinions on having it corrected. We had DD's lip and tongue clipped by a pediatric dentist at 6 weeks and we never looked back!

  • Run. Don't walk to have it connected. I suffered a tongue tie in DS for 3 weeks. His was clipped by an ENT with scissors. The LC who identifies DS tie saw dd at birth and DXed her as tongue tied. In the 3 yrs between them a new pedi dentist opened who corrected ties with a laser (coincidentally DS dentist!) so dd was clipped at 7 days via laser.
Both procedures super easy for the kiddos and nursing was 180 degrees different almost immediately.
    Good luck
  • Defiantly have pediatrician refer to pediatric ENT dr. We waited 2-3 weeks before my sons was clipped, and it was so injured and my supply so decreased that I could never fully satisfy him and needed to supplement with formula. It also led to him not getting back to birth weight for almost a month and not sleeping well, eating every 2 hours. Itts a quick & easy procedure. Harder on mommy then baby. Good luck!

  • i took DS2 to the pedi on yesterday, they clipped in about 2 seconds.  It helped his latch instantly.
