Success after IF

How Long Did You Wait

how long did you wait between your FETs? My daughter is 6 months old. Both my RE & OB said I only need to wait 6 months. A couple of people have told me some horror stories about having kids too close to each other. I'm getting older and I don't want to wait too long.

Re: How Long Did You Wait

  • I think it depends on your particular circumstances. if you had a c section they might recommend waiting longer than if you had an uncomplicated vaginal birth. If your OB a and RE are comfortable with a six month guideline and you trust your doctors then I would go with it.

My RE was not comfortable going ahead with a FET for number two (and three) until I had weaned. I BF my son for a year and then weaned to prepare for a FET. We had a few setbacks. My son was 2.5 when K&A were born.

    Good luck!!!

  • I don't think there is any reason to wait..unless you are wanting a vbac or something..and even with a vbac I think most doctors are ok so long as there is 18 months between deliveries.  I was told by an RE about 5-6 months after having my first son that we should not wait (undetectable amh, low afc.).  I actually was able to have a vbac with my children only being about 20 months apart. My SIL (40) and brother (46) got pregnant 9 months after she had her first and it was a c-section.  I am glad I did not wait because I have not had my period return after #2. I don't know if that means anything or not, but I would be concerned if I was still wanting another.

  • I got pregnant with #2 when #1 was 8.5 months. I was able to attempt a VBAC with only 17 months between deliveries. The first 5 months of 2u2 was very hard but I love the age difference now. My kids enjoy the same activities and will only be 1yr apart in school.

  • My kids are almost exactly 2 1/2 years apart. I nursed DD1 for 14 months and then took a few months off before doing my FET. Honestly, I wish I would have spaced them another 6 months apart because potty training with a newborn and then going back to work with a collicky infant and a toddler was a nightmare. But I was on a time line. We only had one frostie and if the FET didn't work, I wanted to be able to go for another fresh cycle before I turned 35.

All situations are different. But I think there is some value in taking a little time after weaning to yourself. Good luck!

  • We attempted IVF when my son was 7m old. I was terrified of what that would look like had it been successful. In retrospect I think DS was manageable by 16 months or so and would've been ok. I wouldn't have wanted them closer together than that. I personally would need the eldest to be able to communicate and follow directions at least a little to cope. My RE always told me to enjoy breast feeding and only return to TTC once I was ready to wean but time pressures and finances meant I gave up BF at 4m to TTC and I do regret that.
  • Thanks so much for the responses. We have our consult next week and then we will start FET in February sometime. So DD will be almost 8 months old. I had the easiest pregnancy. No morning sickness, or anything. I also had a pretty easy delivery, I pushed for 3.5 hours, but it wasn't awful. I had hardly any pain afterwards and was walking around our neighborhood in about 2 weeks. I know this next pregnancy will probably be terrible. Haha
  • Ds is 5.5 months and my RE said u can start whenever I'm ready since I had an uncomplicated vaginal birth. We will be planning our fet for April which is about 8 months pp.

  • I'll have to go by pregnancies as I've only ever done one FET but my first three kids are all right about two and a half years apart and I have loved that spacing.  My third and fourth are only 16 months apart and I'll say that has been the hardest.  After that, I told my husband there was no way we were doing our FET for at least a  year and a half.  My body needed time to recover and my sanity needed time as well!

But, there is no perfect spacing for each person.  Some people thrive on the chaos of two under two and others love having large gaps.  You just need to think about what your life is like and go from there.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • We did IVF to get our 17 month old son.  Our doctors told us our best chances of conceiving naturally would be to try right away.  We waited about 3 months after our son was born and started trying again with just doing femara/clomid/trigger and we were unsuccessful.  Around 7/8 months old we did IUI twice and those were both unsuccessful.  We so badly wanted to get pregnant without having to do IVF again but at the same time I was scared having them so close together.  Luckily our son was a very "easy" baby and we thought it was worth the try.  We did have a miracle and after taking a break and getting ready to try 1 more IUI when our son was about 14 months old we found out we got pregnant on our own.  Our 2 will be about 21 months apart which I'm really looking forward to.  I'm sure it will be overwhelming at times but also a ton of fun too.  Good luck to you!
