Babies Head shape

So my LO just turned 5 months. At his 4 mo check up I asked his doctor what he thought of his head shape. It appears he favors his left side. The doctor just said to keep him up right as much as possible, more tummy time and turn him a different direction in his crib.  So we have been doing that for the last month.  Well now I can see an improvement on his left side, but I also see a flatter spot developing on the center back.  I have been trying to position LO with his head turned now, but every time I go back to check he is laying with his head straight.  He is in daycare and she keeps him up right as much as possible during the day.  Anyone have experience with this?  And suggestions? My grandmother says it will "pop out" once he is crawling.  We do have a boppy noggin nest but you are not suppose to use it during sleep.

  • and we are not scheduled to see the doctor again for another month, at 6 mo check up. I am worried at that point it will be too late and he will need to see a specialist for a helmet, which if thats what he needs we will get one.

  • My daughter's head also favored one side a bit but my Dr. Said she was not worried. Now she primarily sleeps on her tummy and flips her head from side to side so I feel better about it.

I'm sure it's fine if the doctor said what he said, however If it were me, for piece of mind, I would call or email my Dr. Even though you have an appt. in a month that's a long time in baby time if something does need to be addressed. Sounds like you are staying on top of it though and have made some progress. There are literally like a million things to worry about with these LOs! Keep us posted!
  • My LO has a helmet. A craniofacial specialist can measure his head and rate the flat spot as mild, moderate, or severe. Moderate or severe need a helmet. An orthotist could also do the scan for this. I would highly recommend asking your pedi for the referral to do this sooner rather than later. If your LO needs it and you wait to start the process until 6 mo, he could be 7 mo before he actually gets it. The earlier they start the less time they will need it. LO started at 3.5 mo. He has had it for 6 weeks and there has already been incredible change! Good luck to you...hope you don't need it, but I would advise getting right on it!
  • Thanks ladies!
