A great way to narrow crib options is to search Amazon.com. You can narrow by ratings as well as options like color and style. It's a good way to see which cribs have a lot of good reviews all in one place.
...aren't all cribs gender neutral? I feel so confused. I feel that the suggestion that crib design should be specific to a certain gender violates new posting guidelines. Please see below.
DO respect the feelings and opinions of other members. The Bump fosters a global community of every age, race, philosophy, sexual orientation, culture, sex and gender (yes, dads are here too!).
I choose mine by wandering around the baby stores (BuyBuy Baby, & Babies 'R' Us) and picked out the one I fell in love with. It reminds me of a ship, which personally think is gender neutral. If we were to have a girl I was going to do boats and mermaids. We are having a boy so we are just going with a boats and anchor theme. Too many of the cribs I saw reminded me of a baby jail cell.
I ordered my daughter's crib (The Davenport) from BuyBuyBaby. It's from a company called Baby Appleseed. They offer a variety of different color options.
I thought that the book baby bargains was very informative about cribs. Consider what is important to you. Convertible features (cost more and convert to toddler and then a full). Hardwood is pricier but more durable. I think it's important to have solid wood without any particle board and non-toxic low voc stain or paint. Sustainable forestry methods and made in the USA are other considerations. I picked the davinci jenny Lind. A hardwood crib made in the USA wasn't in my budget but that one is non toxic paint on solid pine (sustainably forested) and gets great reviews on amazon and I like the classic style). If you want to save money and get a quality crib I keep reading good things about ikea cribs.
I bought a used Ikea crib off craigslist for $40. If I were a pickier person, I'd look at reviews on amazon to help make my decision. To me, a crib that is both cheap and sturdy is a good crib.
We went with the one that was being offered to us for free by a coworker. It's gorgeous and probably very similar to what I would have picked out in my own.
Just a heads-up, Ikea just issued a recall on mattresses for the VYSSA crib in Canada. So, maybe don't buy that one. Apparently there's too big a gap between the mattress and the side of the crib.

This is for Ikea mattresses that were made May 2014 and earlier. It's a valid concern, but please watch that you don't spread misinformation.
I got mine from babies r us. They are all gender neutral there. I know some stores have gender specific ones (like restoration hardware). I chose a plain white one because we'd ideally like another baby. All our big purchase items were gender neutral. If you go with plain white or brown, you will be okay!
