Pregnant after IF

Glucose test question

Did you ladies eat something (non-sugary, obviously) before you went in for the glucose test?  Or did you just go with an empty stomach.  The nurse said I may want to eat some meat or protein in the morning before going in, which may be a good idea....but I hear the drink you take is kinda gross, and I don't want to puke.

  • Mine was scheduled for mid-afternoon and I was told to eat something 3 hours before my appointment. I had a pb&j sandwich mid-morning and couldn't have anything except water after, had the drink at 1:45 when I got there and my blood drawn at 2:45. The drink really wasn't too bad. It was oranges flavored and a bit sweet. I wouldn't worry too much about puking from it. It was nothing compared to the thick, disgusting crap I had to drink for a barium swallow test before.

  • The one hour test is usually done 2-3 hours after a meal and the 3 hour after a night fast. Failed the 1 hour spectacularly but passed the 3 hour. I don't think the 1 hour will be passed by anyone with any kind of insulin problem, period, no matter what they eat or drink. But if your issue is minor or under control with medication you should be able to pass the 3 hour. I did and I had to make them tell me. I haven't seen any information on a 2 hour test.

  • I was told I HAD to eat before the 1 hour. Mine was in the afternoon. I ate normally (carbs) in the morning and then had a quinoa/veggie dish for lunch and nuts on the way to the test.

Also, I LOVED the drink. Everyone says it's like soda like it's a bad thing. It's freaking delicious. But I'm weird.

  • I asked this question specifically! For the 1 hr, you are supposed to eat normal. Obviously don't eat a stack of pancakes but just what you would normally eat. The 3 hr one you do have to fast for and it's more sugary. I was allowed to have sips of water after I drank the 3 hr drink. That one was worse! I didn't feel super nauseous until about 45 min in but managed not to puke!

I had GD last pregnancy so they are testing me early this time. If I pass this one, I will have to get another one at 28 weeks again.

  • @gsancho‌ I was wondering how you made out. I didn't figure you'd really puke from it. Lol. I was thinking it tasted like a cross between orange soda and Hi-C.

  • I had to take the 3 hour test, and the drink was really sweet 100g in a 10oz of bottle. I was gagging for the first hour of the test. The drink they give you for 1-hour is not as sweet and it has less sugar 50g, and I had that cold.
  • I hope it's ok to post on this thread bc I see it's from a month ago, but didn't want to start a new discussion that's already been discussed.

I just had the Glucose Challenge about 20 minutes ago and am still burping it up. I hate heartburn so much. They made me fast since midnight and then drink the nasty orange (50 ml I think). I'm 24 weeks, but am on hospital bedrest since PPROM at 21 weeks. They are coming back to draw my blood in another 30 minutes or so.

Does anyone ever get a score for this one other than pass or fail? I saw a lot of numbers with the 3 hour test but nothing for this one.

  • I'm from Canada - so I don't know if the test if different here.

I was told not to fast for the one-hour test, but to just eat normally. I had a regular lunch (sandwich, yogurt, fruit) about an hour before the test. Passed with flying colours, told my level was "ideal."

I wouldn't try to eat any differently than usual in the days leading up to the test (i.e., low carb, etc.). GD is a pretty serious condition, and you don't want to try and 'trick' the test. If your levels are really a problem, you want to be able to get treatment for it as soon as possible. Just what seems logical to me.

The drink tastes exactly like flat orange pop. It really wasn't so bad. Good luck!
  • It made me feel gross. I was nauseous but they said that was normal. almost to the point of a headache

@starlightgator‌ didn't you just have steroids?? Glucose test shouldn't be run too close to the steroids because sugar will be elevated. Hope it doesn't mean you'll have to do the 3-hour.
The cut-offs have been debated. Either they're using the old 140 as cut off or the newer, tighter 130. So the pass/fail is based on those cut offs

  • @Ecarabeo217‌ Yes, I had the steroids injections one week ago. Failed the glucose challenge test today with a 143. I looked online and it said anything over 140. Damn. So close. But the nurse said anything over 120 is a fail.

Now, I have to do the three-hour test on Monday. Sucks. And my MFM told me to increase carbs leading up to the test. Are these people trying to set me up for failure? WTF?

  • My doctor told me to eat extra carbs for 3 days prior to the test as well. I think that is different than on the way to the test... Maybe it makes sure our bodies are used to dealing with carbs before the test? But eating sugar on the way to the test is basically just making the test harder than it is supposed to be.
