Sensitive Gag Reflex

Anyone else's LO have this? I know they have more sensitive gag reflexes than older people but I think my LO has an extra sensitive one. He's been on purees for 2 months now and still gags and pukes at anything with any sort of texture. Any ideas on how to get him used to more texture/solid food? Just keep trying?

Re: Sensitive Gag Reflex

  • I don't really have advice, only commiseration. He tolerates purees very well. The SECOND we try something that isn't pureed, he literally vomits everywhere. I keep trying, but it happens every single time.

  • @ksyknelvr73 - I love me some commiseration. And that is exactly us. What I've read is to just keep trying and eventually they get the hang of it..but...are they going to come clean up the vomit? :-&

Seriously. It is absolutely disgusting. My H gets SO frustrated with it also, but there just isn't anything to remedy this except time, I'm betting. My older son didn't do this...he gagged a little initially, but never did the vomiting thing.

  • This is us. She usually does fine with level ones and twos. But we've tried threes and she gets the tiny noodles on her tounge and gags then vomits. She did it with puffs and the Cheeto-like puffs also, until she gets used to them. I guess we just keep trying.

  • I can't do blw for ds as he gags way too hard and has thrown up. We do little bits of food. He gets annoyed though as he would rather hold the food. We will try again in a little while once his chewing gets better.

  • Mine gags at purée food and won't let us spoon feed him. He likes blw but my daycare isn't very comfortable with it. He has gagged pretty bad with blw too and it makes me nervous!
  • hahaha I feel the same way @ns1 - Purees for life!!!
  • Mine has/had this. She'd yak all over herselfand her high chair the second she got food in there. I just took a step back from solids. Kept occasionally trying them, but didn't push it as she wasn't ready. Occasionally trying was important though aspart of the reason for my DDs puking was she hadnt figured out how to move food around in there without tripping her gag reflex. Unfortunately, that one takes practice, but she's got it now. I gave her puffs and soft table food to practice (we mostly do purees, but I throw in some table food if I think she can handle it). In the meantime, enjoy the not-as-nasty diapers and not having to bring food in the diaper bag while it lasts :)

  • This afternoon I tried to give DS a piece of banana. I know he likes the flavor, so I thought it would be a good start. NOPE! He gagged so loud I'm sure all the neighbors heard him. He also kept gagging even after he spit it out. It's a terrible sound and I don't want to continue knowing he hates it that much. I figured he just wasn't ready.

  • We've tried banana a few times. Not too successful. It can be scary when he gags too hard. We keep trying and I get to eat extra bananas!
  • Hopefully they grow out of it! Dd is almost 3 and still gags every time on bananas, yogurt and applesauce.... So far ds hasn't gagged on anything yet so fx for that!
