TTC After a Loss

Scared...Questions for my OB?

Hello all. I've intro'd before (twice I think!) but I'll give a brief history for mobile users.

We started trying to conceive in Feb 2014, got pregnant right away but found out it was a blighted ovum at 9 weeks. We took a few months off and then tried for seven cycles and found out we were pregnant again but lost it Christmas morning at 5 weeks. Doctor says it was a CP.

So I have an appointment with her this afternoon because after looking at my charts, she thinks I might have PCOS. Before my CP she said we'd do all the tests she can before sending me to a specialist because they like to see we've been trying for a year.

She wants to work on this PCOS but I'm more worried about the two losses. Who cares if I can get pregnant if we're just going to lose them? I mentioned this to her on the phone and she said we should take as much time as we need to heal emotionally before TTC again.

So am I just being 'emotional'? Is it reasonable to expect some sort of solution or reassurance before we try again? Is there any sort of test I can ask for or something? Genetic testing? I know. I'm grasping at straws here! What do you wise and wonderful ladies think? TIA!

Re: Scared...Questions for my OB?

  • I am in full agreement with you.  With 2 losses and a possible PCOS issue at play, I would not be waiting a year to contact an RE.

  • Thank you @Ann612 I think her reasoning is because of what @Kellybenelly83‌ said. Insurance stuff. I am 24 and she had a little rant once about doctors that hand out fertility meds like candy! She doesn't like that.

Thank you both for your replies!

  • I'm seeing an RE after two losses (their protocol - everyone is different). I'm going to be having RPL testing and my husband, a SA. Do your research, white down your questions ahead of time (feel free to run them by us here), check your insurance details before making apts, and if you need support seek it - here, family, therapy, etc. GL OP!

  • Not much to add except I was one that waited until 3 losses to schedule something with an RE per my OB's suggestion. Some even say 4, it seems so crazy to me!

Good luck with your appointment *hug*
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • I agree with calling your insurance to see about your coverage.  You have to be your own advocate because you know your body, you know your heart, and you know what is right for you.

  • PCOS can play a part in loss. It is good to look into it for your health and future pregnancies. I would call your insurance and see if they have restrictions on seeing an RE. Some insurance companies allow you to see specialists earlier.

  • My OB was "not alarmed" by my second loss, because it was very different from my first loss (see siggy). She was willing to do basic testing, but kept encouraging me to try. In Nov. we put a plan in place for "if you aren't pregnant by March, we'll do more testing." Well, I had another loss within that time frame so it was straight to the RE for me with 3 losses in under a year. But if you have PCOS, you should absolutely be in the care of an RE. Endocrine disorders are not your OB's area of expertise. I would also suggest you call your insurance company as PP have suggested. But if they won't let you be referred before 3 losses or a diagnosis, then I would push for a full PCOS workup with your OB. If she finds something even remotely suggesting PCOS I would insist on seeing an RE. I also 100% agree with what @kellybenelly83 said regarding not taking clomid from an OB, as they are likely not in a position to do follicle monitoring (although I know this isn't always the case). Also, I'm so sorry for your losses. ((hugs))

  • I'm pretty much going to echo what others have said.  2 losses sucks, but might not qualify you for testing, or to be under the care of an RE.  However, a PCOS suspicion (or diagnosis) certainly warrants an RE.  I recommend you call your insurance and look into RE's in your area to see if they will take you based on a PCOS suspicion with 2 losses.  They might not, but it certainly doesn't hurt to look into it if your insurance will cover it (or you can pay OOP).

If your OB is willing to do some CD3 b/w certainly take them up on that while you wait.  7DPO b/w might be helpful too.  Good luck!

  • Thank you ladies. My doctor basically said exactly what you did! She said for the RE she usually refers to, you have to wait a year and our year just started over but she ordered an ultrasound on my ovaries. She also ordered CD3 and 7DPO blood work. So we'll see how all that works out!

  • Im sorry for your losses. Welcome to the board there's a lot of smart wonderful women here to support you. Hugs!
  • Wow. Your story is almost identical to mine, to the month sometimes! I too lost two pregnancies last year. My OB did a bunch of bloodwork after the second to check hormone levels and for clotting disorders. I'm not sure if you have had any of that done but if they think it's PCOS I guess that wouldn't be important. All of my bloodwork came back normal so now we are just TTC again and see what happens....
I totally understand how you feel about getting pregnant though. I've said to my husband a thousand times, "What's the point, if we end up losing it?" My OB always says, "At least we know you CAN!" Great, but can I carry to term?(Sorry for the novel)
  • Not much to add to pp's. I went to an RE after 2 losses, my OB and RE are of the opinion that we shouldn't have to suffer through a 3rd loss and my insurance covered it. As far as reassurance and fixing it - there's no guarantees. And a lot of times there are no answers. I'm not saying don't go, an RE can help, but they can't promise anything. Any dr that says they guarantee a baby - find another dr. Just my opinion

    PgAL welcome
