My mom just called. My 95 year old grandmother was taken to the hospital with pneumonia. The doctors say that all they can do is make her comfortable. It's a matter of hours now. I know she'll pass peacefully and surrounded by those who love her.

I can't help but feel guilty. I haven't seen Nana in a number of years because I don't live close. She's been suffering dementia the past couple of years, so phone calls were out, too. And now, with no one to watch LO and SO not sure what he can get for time from his job, I may not make the funeral either. I feel terrible.

That is a tough situation. My granny passed with dementia a few years ago and had no idea who I was the three years prior. I hope you find a way to see her. t&p for you and your family.

When the time comes, many funeral homes are equipped for video feeds so you can attend from a distance.

Thank you for all the kind thoughts. I just spoke with my sister. It's not pneumonia. She tested positive for influenza - the strain that wasn't covered by this year's flu shot. My dad and his two sisters have been exposed to it. Which kind of puts an end to the question of me going to the funeral. I don't think I can risk bringing home the flu to LO :-(

Thanks again for your kind thoughts. Nana passed peacefully this afternoon with my dad and his sisters with her. I won't be going to the funeral. The strain of flu she had was a particularly nasty one that wasn't covered by this year's flu shot. My dad and everyone in contact with her were exposed to it. Once she was diagnosed, everyone had to "suit up" (according to my sister) if they wanted to be in contact with her. I can't risk going and bringing it home to William. I have a number of cousins in the same situation, so we're planning an internment ceremony for the spring when the ground thaws. She was a kick-ass lady who was kind and giving and compassionate all the while refusing to take shit from anyone. She has 6 granddaughters and she taught us all "homemakerly" things like cooking, sewing, knitting and how to set a proper table but also expected us all to get college degrees and to use them, and we did. We will miss her.
