Normal Results for 1-hour Glucose Test?

I love technology. But in this moment it's driving me insane because I'm impatient and worried. I had to take the 1-hour glucose test early because of my bmi. The test results were posted on my online chart. My glucose level was 126 mg/dL, and my doctor flagged the test. The normal range listed in the results said 65-99 mg/dL.

But from everything I read online about the 1 hour glucose test, anything under 140 mg/dL is fine, and under 130 is even better. I read that a fasting glucose level higher than 99 is worrisome; but I wasn't fasting obviously because I drank the sugar drink and had lunch 2 hours prior. I'm so confused. Ill certainly be calling my doctor tomorrow. But before I stay up all night worrying I have diabetes does anyone know anything about this?

  • I am guessing they are going to have you repeat the test later in pregnancy like 22-24wks because you are borderline.

  • I agree, talk to your doc, but my doctor said anything under 140 on the 1-hour was totally normal since it's not a fasting test. Did your doctor know that you weren't fasting before the one hour (I mean, besides the drink, did they know you had eaten that day)? I'd let them know. It's possible that they are testing you for an underlying blood sugar issue and not for GD.

The main thing to keep in mind is that the 1-hour is just a screen. It's to pick up anyone who might be having an issue. The 3-hour is diagnostic. So it's totally possible to fail the one hour and still have absolutely no issues.

She probably will anyway. At this point, they're just trying to eliminate pre-existing diabetes. Even if you pass the first time, you'll still likely end up taking the test again around 20 weeks to test for gestational diabetes.

OP, I wouldn't worry about it right now. If you don't hear from your doctor tomorrow, give them a call to see what they think about the level. Worst case, you'll have to go for the 3 hour.

  • @divinemsbee‌ - I did tell them I had just eaten lunch when they told me they wanted me to take the test.

Thanks for all your honest and kind words ladies, im grateful for your insight :) I'm relaxing.
  • When in college I had to do the 3 he fasting test. My numbers hit 136 at the highest. I got flagged as pre insulin resistant. The reason they flagged me was I have family history and they wanted to monitor me so I didn't progress further into diabetes. Unless the doc calls or says something it's probably not a big deal.

  • To answer your question, at my OB's office the 140 is black and white. Under it and you're fine. Over it and you move on to the three hour test. With DS, I had a 136 and my OB mentioned how I squeaked by!

But like the PP's said, don't worry about it quite yet.
